The Common Room / Re: 1921 Census

Do I understand from what I'm reading that my Ancestry subscription is useless if I want to access the 1921 census?

You won't see the 1921 Census on Ancestry for some time. They will have access eventually when the excusive FindMyPast deal expires, but that may be a few years.

Thanks for the heads-up Antony  :)

I've been an Ancestry.com subscriber for years - tried FindMyPast on a trial once but couldn't get on with it.

Do I understand from what I'm reading that my Ancestry subscription is useless if I want to access the 9121 census?

I've emailed and tweeted Ancestry, but they are not responding.

Thanks Jebber,

I'll check that out.

Thanks Andrew, really good info.

In the end I have stayed with Ancestry and gone with a monthly FindMyPast for a test period - I must admit I'm not getting on with it very well. The tree software/display is horrendous. I think I'll just mine some info I'm looking for and then dump it.

Out of interest, what's your (anyone's) recommendation for an offline tree software programme (I'm a Mac user)?

Thanks

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Ancestry.com and FindMyPast
« on: Saturday 13 October 18 17:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've had an Ancestry.com account for a few years now, found it really useful but getting to the limits of where I want to go with hints and how diverse I want my tree to be.

I was thinking about cancelling my Ancestry subscription for a year and moving to FindMyPast, as I get the impression that there are some different sources (I can't really afford both).

I was wondering if people could confirm the below assumptions:

1. I can download my tree from Ancestry using a GEDcom file and upload it to FindmyPast?

2. If, at a later date, I want to re-activate my Ancestry account, will everything I've done before I cancelled have been saved under the "Guest" user profile?

Has anyone got any further advice, hints and tips?

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1871 Census - possible handicap
« on: Wednesday 25 October 17 16:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Attached is an extract from the 1871 census for my great-grandmother, aged just 3 months at this point.

The image shows what was written in the final column. This is in the column where census takers are required to note of the person is:

1. Deaf and/or dumb
2. Blind
3. Imbecile or idiot
4. Lunatic

I don't think the writing says any of the above, and at first I wondered if it said "Cripple" but I'm not convinced - not only because of the writing, but also, how would you know if a 3-month old baby is crippled? And furthermore, she wasn't crippled as she grew.

Anyone got any thoughts they can offer?

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Finding streets and roads that are now gone
« on: Wednesday 25 October 17 11:58 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone offer any good hints and tips on finding now-disappeared streets and roads? A large chunk of my father's paternal family hail from the Greenwich and Deptford areas of London, which have changed dramatically over the last 200 years.

Often, a bit of internet research turns up the required information, but sometimes I'm getting a little stumped.

Specifically, I'm trying to find out where Little Thames Street was - I know it was SOMEWHERE around the Borthwick Street/Watergate Street area, right by the river, (1881 and 1891 census returns) but I haven't been able to get any further than that.

Any advice on good search resources would be greatly appreciated - and any information on this specific query would be wonderful.

(And if I'm posting this in the wrong part of the forum, please let me know - I'm having a little difficulty navigating my way around the different areas!)

Thanks.
