There are the remains of a stone cottage just to the west of the western portal of the Butterley Tunnel on the Cromford Canal. Around 50 years ago when I was young, the cottage was always known as Walter Bradley's Cottage.
I have a photo somewhere of the cottage, probably from the 1930s, when the cottage was in good condition. I'll find it and post in here.
Edit. I believe that there was a stable attached to the cottage, possibly for the horses that were unhitched from the canal boats at this point and then walked over the tunnel top, onto the lane known as The Coach Road, to the Eastern portal at the Golden Valley. The boats themselves were 'legged' along the narrow tunnel.
