Lovely, thank you David and Forfarian!
I have actually managed to deduce through the helpful Scottish Jewish archives that Imre's parents were Emil and Johanna Berger, and I then found a well-researched Ancestry tree with his family including photos. So it's great to locate Imre, and he was definitely Hungarian. But it wasn't the Imre I was hoping for, although it's possible somehow he is related to the Imre Furst on my tree. Some of his siblings were living in London, so it's conceivable there is family there still and I might try to connect with them to see what I can find out that way.
Thank you all for your help!

Interesting thank you KGarrad :)

Yes there do seem to be quite a few Furst records for England and Wales, I wonder though how many of them with Hungarian heritage. I guess there would be far fewer for just Scotland.

I would say that Furst is (or was as most would have changed their names) fairly common in Hungary, there are 500 or so Furst marriages and death records on JewishGen, and double that for births. So it's quite manageable numbers for doing research if you're looking at particular locations :)

I don't think I can view the marriage details online, there isn't an image, so I guess I would have to order the certificate. No death records come up.

Still, I suppose that the Imre Furst born in 1909 might be a relative of my grandmother too, if he was from Budapest, Hungary. I am looking for someone who might be the father of a DNA match of mine (this DNA match only just found out he has Hungarian heritage through a DNA test which showed the person he thought was his father in fact wasn't). So it could be anyone related to me, I think on my father's maternal side (worked out from triangulation), who was in Glasgow in 1948. It's a bit of a needle in a haystack situation!

Amazing info thank you softly softly :)

If he was born in 1909 that probably discounts him as my grandmother's cousin, as he would need to have been born in 1899. Which is what I wanted to find out. So I'm very grateful. I was nearly getting very excited there, I thought he might be my man!!

That's interesting softly softly, thank you so much. I will hunt for the certificate on the National Archives, I should have thought of that!

Apologies, it should say 1951 in the subject. There was a Cyril I Furst in 1961 which I suppose could be the same person but I'd have to prove it.

Hello
I'm really keen to find out if the Imre Furst who was in Glasgow on the electoral roll in 1951 came from Hungary and was my grandmother's 2nd cousin, who was born 27 Sept 1899 in Budapest to parents Ignac Furst and Ilona Rothauser.
Thank you so much for any help, Colee

Hi Justin

Your insight on equivalent names is fascinating.

So can Cohen be interchangeable with Levi?

Therefore is it possible that this record on Synagogue Scribes is a daughter of Jacob's? It has Jesse/Shprintsa - daughter of privileged member (which we know Jacob was) Levi Cohen the Warden deceased (which would also fit as Jacob died in 1815).

Family Name   COHEN
Forenames   Jesse
Hebrew Name   Shprintsa (Dau. of a Privd Member)
Event   Marriage
Date   1816 [26 Jun]
Father’s Hebrew Name   Levi Cohen the Warden deceased
Spouse   DAVIDSON Meyer

I'm also interested in the Jonas family, as one of the brothers Godfrey married Frances Jonas. Her record on Synagogue Scribes shows her father is Jesse - what does this normally pair with?

Reference   GSM 114/19
Family Name   JONAS
Forenames   Frances
Hebrew Name   Brynla
Event   Marriage
Date   1808 [27 Apr]
Father’s Hebrew Name   Jesse Sapir [sofer / scribe]
Spouse   COHEN Godfrey Alexander

Could this be her father?
Reference   GSM 014/7
Family Name   JONES
Forenames   Henry
Hebrew Name   Naphtali Hirtz
Event   Marriage
Date   1793 [23 Oct]
Father’s Hebrew Name   Yehuda from Cassel
Spouse   MYERS Fanny

Jacob had a step son Solomon Cassel from his 2nd wife Springze who was married before Jacob to Dr Leib Cassel.

Maybe I'm not making much sense, but there might be connections in the names which lead me to where they come from, and I could potentially look in the Jewish records from there.
