World War One / Re: Lancashire Fusilier?

Forester,

On the 1901 census john wood has one younger brother, Thomas born about 1899 so about 3 years younger than John. I think it's possible that the chap on the left could be slightly youger than the right?!?

I've repeated your search on medal cards and there are 14 records, I've tried using the regimental numbers in the ww1 pension records database without any luck  :(.

World War One / Lancashire Fusilier?

I've recently come across this photo of my great grandfather John Wood (seated right) with another chap who my mother thinks is related to him either brother or cousin. The other chap appears to be in the Lancashire fusiliers?

Can you think of any way to find all the men with surname Wood who served with a particular regiment?

World War One / What Medal Bar?
« on: Sunday 30 December 07 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Guys,

I've recently found this photo of my great grandfather John Wood in WW1. My Mum says he was in Mesopotamia during the war, I'm pretty sure he was in RFA.

What's confusing me and I hope you could clear up is that he appears to be wearing a medal bar in the photo below. I had previously thought that WW1 medals weren't issued until 1919?

I've zoomed in on the bar and had a look around and it looks like it could be either 14 or 14/15 star, i.e. red/white/blue left to right as we look at it.

Just wondering if anybody knows whether old (C1900) school registers and records would be kept somewhere and if so where's a good place to start?

Hi BC,

I have Frederick George Wall getting married to Mary Matilda Stevens in West Bromwich in 1905. A witness at the wedding was John Wesley Wall but I don't know what relation to Frederick has was if any.

Worth a pop I guess.

Hi,

The combination of the numbers/letters in the roll and page columns next to each medal indicate a location in the original medal rolls. The medal rolls are held at Kew and may include further information about your grandfather's unit etc.

This link describes more about the other bits on the card...
