Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 census request McStay

Did your McStay's have any connection with Ireland (County Sligo?) or Scotland?  I know my G grandfather lived in Sligo in 1884 but can find no other family connections in that area.   I am wondering if he was an an incomer to Sligo - from another part of Ireland or elsewhere.

I have never heard of an actual army base in Strathaven but I know that german POWs were billetted in the area and worked on local farms.  Suppose there must have been some British soldiers keeping an eye on them.  Suggest you might contact Strathaven Echoes. Chapel Road Strathaven (don't know web address), local newspaper.

Sligo / Re: WYNNEs of Sligo

Probably an entirely different branch of the family - we were poor and Catholic, unlike the Wynnes of Hazelwood.  However, my great grandmother was Alice Wynn (or Wynne as you know spelling was a bit vague in the 19th century).  She lived in Sligo town in 1884 when my grandmother was born in the Mall there. Married to James McStay, she was a servant and he was a pensioner (although he was only 25 years old).  They moved to Glasgow around 1890.

I found the Catholic Archive at St Andrews Cathedral to be very helpful when I was looking for records of a now demolished Church and found loads of info about my family in the 1880s.  However, I think Airdrie might be in Motherwell Diocese and contacting the archivist at the cathedral in Motherwell should help you locate any extant Catholic parish records.
