Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Deaths William Soppet
« on: Friday 07 October 22 05:39 BST (UK)  »
There is a baptism in Gateshead 23 Feb 1752 for a William Soppet with father Thomas.  It looks as though that William may have been buried at Shotley in 1822.

Marriage in Gateshead in 1851 between a Thomas Soppet and Sidney Shields

Thank you Rosie,
Can you give me the source for the baptism of William in 1752?
Also the burial at Shotley in 1822

Did you make a typo of 1851 for the marriage between a Thomas Soppet and Sidney Shields.
I have an entry for 17 June 1751 for that couple. My source is the IGI.

What do you have to confirm that William was born in Stannington in 1762 ?

Baptism record image for the first child, John,
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-XCQ9-R9C?i=250&cc=1309819&cat=1809006

so that says William was a native of Gateshead -   though that is the Bishop's Transcript rather than the Original Parish Register, so you'd need to also check the original to be sure the BT doesn't have an error.

Boo

Thank you Boo,
In reality, I don't know if I have the correct William Soppet.
I have the baptism records for all three children, so I know I have their parents names correct.
The youngest son, James Gray Soppet is my GG Grandfather.
My source for John is from a transcript on MyHeritage. I see yours is from Family Search and is an image, which I am grateful to get.

I have the image of the Bishops Transcript for the marriage of William and Isabella.
What I really need is the Parish register, which should give William's parents names.
That would confirm whether or not his parents are Ralph & Margaret Soppet and therefore he was born at Stannington in 1762. This makes him 36 when married. (Isabella was 29)

The next nearest William I can find in age was born at Gateshead in 1752 to parents Thomas and Sydney which makes him age 46 if he married Isabella - a rather large age difference. (17 years)

There is a William Soppitt b. 1782 but in Queenhithe, London, which tends to rule him out.
I cannot go to Newcastle to look up parish registers because I am in New Zealand, so I'm a bit stuck.

If you go to the 1st page, there should be a description of the enumeration district....

Hi KGarrad,

Can you explain how(where) to search for particular pages please?

I'm a bit clueless about all things Enumerator I'm afraid.

Thanks

Hi gmichaelking.
I can help you with this.
You have two courses of action.
One is with Ancestry or the other is with Family Search + findmypast. In both cases you will need a membership with one or the other.

First, using the case KGarrad has given: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQBC-N2L
This opens the transcript. Here you will read:
This image is available:
•   At findmypast. By clicking here you will be leaving FamilySearch.org (fees and other terms may apply).
•   When using the site at a family history center.
•   To signed-in members of supporting organizations.
Plus a 'Sign In' button to Family Search. This is followed by another button “Visit Partner Site”.
The image of the census page that contains the transcript opens.
At the left of the screen is an arrow pointing left. Click the arrow until you arrive at page one where you will find the instructions to the Enumerator (Person who carried out the survey)

Second, in the case I presented in my original post using Ancestry.
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1841&indiv=try&h=4901729
This opens at the transcript. On left is a miniature of the page image. Click the ‘View’ button.
This opens the image of the Census page.
At the bottom of your screen is a small rectangular box that tells you where in the Census document the page is. It is image 14 with a light grey background. Click the 14 and enter a 1. A GO button appears – click it and page one will open.
Read the handwritten instructions beginning “Description of ditto . . . “. This tells the Enumerator where he is to collect household information from.
I hope this helps you.
Regards, John

Is anyone living near there able to pick this one up?
My GG Grandfather lived on Sheriff Hill in the 1841 Census.
I would like to find what the actual address was and if the house is still there.
The Census Page is at http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1841&indiv=try&h=4901729
Name: James Soppet age 30. Also his wife Rebecca and 5 children.

To everyone who responded.
I never expected so many prompt replies.
I have just joined Rootschat and am very encouraged.
Your info is very good and I have learned much.
You are all great people.

I live in Auckland, New Zealand and if I can help anyone with info on this neck of the woods.
I am a retiree and have been studying the genealogy of my ancestors since 1989.
I am a committee member of the Waitakere Branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG) and a commiitee member of West Auckland Historical Society (WAHS)
The names I am studyong are: SOPPET (SOPPIT), HARRISON, THOMPSON & BRINKWORTH. All originate from England direct to NZ, except Brinkworth is via South Australia.
Best wishes, John

This map may help you to locate the area.  From the enumerator's walk, Team Waggon Way is mentioned, and the map shows Team Colliery with a railway line close by.

Thanks BumbleB, that is a very handy link  :)

Hi jonsops,

I live a couple of miles away, if you can get an address from a later Census, I can take a look for you.

A number of my ancestors lived (and died) in Gateshead Fell & Sheriff Hill, and I was born at the Hospital across the road  :)

Great to hear from you, gmichaelking.
Regrettably, we can't use the next census because they had moved to Tyneside.
However, I will read the enumerators directions from the 1841 census and PM you.
I am a quite competent map reader and should now be able to establish the locality.
Regards, John

Welcome to RootsChat
This is the area in 1857 http://maps.nls.uk/view/102341479#zoom=5&lat=7166&lon=1885&layers=BT

Street numbering did not become formalised in towns until the 1850s at the earliest. Census enumerators were given very clear instructions with regard to the provision of address data. In 1841 it was only necessary to give the name, if any, of the house, part of the town, village or hamlet in which it stood.
This map shows the present aerial view

Thank you, stanmapstone.
This is a very nice map with great detail. I will re-read the enumerators notes and from them I think I will be able to find the area covered.

Thank you, BumbleB.
The map is fantastic.
I have only a vague idea of the area as I have only been through it twice.
I'm from New Zealand, but my wife is from Wingate, Co Durham.
Coincidence is a funny thing. We met in Hong Kong. Then I find that my family originated from quite near to hers.

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Your (2nd) link is only useful to those with an Ancestry subscription?
So, I have added a link to FamilySearch (which is free!):
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQBC-N2L
Reference is HO107; Piece: 296; Folio: 15; Page 25

If you go to the 1st page, there should be a description of the enumeration district.
Bearing that in mind, it might be possible to track the street name?

But addresses were simply not important in 1841 :-\

Thank you, K Garrad.
Yes, that is the correct transcript.
I have looked  at page one but cannot make it fit with today's map.
Please see my esponse to other posters below your reply.
Regards, John
