Perthshire / Re: A 'scandal' in Killin - where to seek details?

I was incorrect - the James b 1835 was actually born to Duncan McMartin and Christian McDiarmid.
I just found his death certificate. I had the tree wrong.

You are correct - the James b 1850 in the 1851 census is Hugh.

Peter's daughter Catherine was born 1836/37 possibly before the wedding - so she or her mother's age was the cause of the scandal. She died 1871 in Dumbarton. Married a Robert McKay.

Son John born 1841 died 1916 in Killin. Had two wives - Janet Malloch and Catherine Brown
Son Donald b 1843 died 22 May 1911 in Killin. Married a Catherine Cameron.
Daughter Christian b 1847.
Son Hugh b 1851 died 5 Jan 1917 in Killin. He married Isabel Robertson in 1874.

There are no baptisms for the children, making this family challenging.
Have to go by census and death certificate if you can find.

Ahh.

The scandal is that Peter McMartin had a child out of wedlock with possibly underage Margaret Ferguson in 1835/36. 1821 being her possible birth year by her death record.
James McMartin was born prior to their marriage in 1837.

Peter's 1st marriage in 1811 states that he was of Kenmore and Christian McDiarmid was of Weem.
Again, they were both from Killin, but in detached sections of these parishes.

Peter's 2nd marriage says he was residing Murlaganbeg and his wife Margaret Ferguson was in Edramucky (north shore of Loch Tay).

Due to the parishes having detached sections, bmd records in this area could be recorded in Killin, Kenmore or Weem with marriage banns in particular often recorded in 2.

Glen Lochay was split between the 3 parishes. By 1930 parish boundaries were realigned so that this area fell entirely in Killin.

This issue is not limited to this area, so keep in mind when searching for records.

Murlaganbeg and Murlaganmore were in Killin parish in between two detached sections of Kenmore parish. Moirlanich and Daldravaig were adjacent, but in Kenmore parish.
Use this map to view the boundaries:https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15.3&lat=56.48431&lon=-4.37442&layers=257s&b=1&o=100

My notes on the family:
Peter McMartin and his 2nd wife Margaret Ferguson resided at Murlaganbeg in the 1841 and 1851 census. Margaret moved to Monomore St in Killin for the 1861 census following Peter's death. She died there in 1892.

Peter was the son of Peter McMartin and Mary McKercher, I believe. Margaret was the daughter of Duncan Ferguson and Catherine Ferguson.

Peter's 1st wife Christina McDiarmid is likely the daughter of Archibald McDiarmid and Helen McPherson of Daletuil which is immediately across the river (not on most maps). Her brother Duncan died at Killin in 1864 - married a Catherine McCall.

Duncan's father will be either a Duncan or Archibald. His mother will be an Elizabeth or Jean.

There is a natural birth of a Duncan at the sheiling of Fandui, on the hill north of Fortingall Kirkton, SW of Pitkerril to an Archibald Campbell of Balnoe, Kinloch Rannoch and Elizabeth McCallum of Fandui 10 Feb 1784.

There is a birth of a Duncan to Archibald Campbell and Elizabeth McDonald in Logierait 19 Aug 1771.
(Only child)

There is a birth of a Duncan to Duncan Campbell and Elizabeth Malloch at Moirlannich, Killin in 1768.
(1 of 7 children) Naming pattern of children does not match. Not this couple.

There is a birth of a Duncan to Duncan Campbell and Elizabeth McLaren at Ardeonaig, Kenmore in 1780. (Only child)

If his birth was recorded, it will likely be of these couples. The first one is more probable than the others, based his father being in Rannoch and mother being in proximity to Pitkerril.
If there is a missing child birth or a previous marriage, then the above could be incorrect.

Gordon MacGregor's work is outstanding - but it should be noted that there are omissions of some children and inconsistencies with regard to some minor marriages. So, like all else, don't treat as biblical and confirm with secondary sources where possible.

Nice find on the place name Throth.

You need to accept that the record of the marriage of Duncan Campbell and Margaret Macnaughton either has not survived, or it is the one in 1804 between Dun Campbell and Margarate Macnaughten in Kilmonivaig. If the latter, you need to consider why a couple married in Kilmonivaig would turn up a decade later in a croft in Dull, which in early 19th century terms is a long distance away, quite apart from being through difficult country.

There were a number of families that moved from or married in Kilmonivaig and worked in Rannoch and Foss. So it isn't impossible the record corresponds, but yes the distance makes it less likely. Foss also saw a number of Kenmore/Killin families move up for work at this time as well.

DNA may also prove the line. I will message you Roberta with regards.

The family of Duncan Campbell and Margaret McNaughton.

Throth may have more info on possible siblings at Pitkerril - but the naming pattern is off for the family he has listed on his site, so I do not think they are related.

There is a Duncan born 1813 working as a trader and a Peter born 1819 working as a bailiff in nearby Cayuga in the 1851 Census, both married. Unclear if these are the corresponding children.
