Armed Forces / Re: Fifth Regiment of Foot enlistments 1780s

Hi Johnrbee
I have also been looking into William Wright although unfortunately, I can't help you get any further. However, I believe my 3rd Great Grandmother Sarah Wright might also be his daughter. She was born in Kingston, Canada C1788 and married John Brocksop in Derby in 1809. The reason I think that Sarah is Mundy's sister is because her daughter Frances Brocksop married Frederick Wright in 1877- who I think was her cousin. Interestingly Ancestry DNA also shows that I am related to a Catherine Wight born in North America in 1796 and living in Derby on the 1841 and 1851 census' so she could be another sibling.

I did not know that William enlisted in Ireland or that he was still in the army in 1806, this is very interesting to me. If Mundy, Cathine and Sarah are all siblings then perhaps William retired in Derby? like you I would love to know more of the story.

My tree is on Ancestry here:

Hi
Thanks for your reply, I've done a little bit more work on it since I wrote that post (2008). I believe that where the vinegar/brewery/old peoples home stands is roughly where Sherwin's Cottage was. In one of the census' (I think 1851) Samuel Sherwin is living there and listed as a farmer of 12 acres. I'd imagine this 12 acres is where Sherwin Street and the surrounding area is now.  I have a letter from a Great Aunt saying that the cottage was build in 1778 by a relative though I think at certain points it was rented out. By the 1890s I think it was probably used by my Great Great Uncle Henry Sherwin as a Brewery, and I believe he built Alpha House next to it. (Attached is a photo of a beer keg that came up on ebay) Around 1910 Henry Sherwin was declared bankrupt and another company bought the Brewery and built the building that is the old people home today.

I worked this out by looking at census returns and old maps on line, I don't know if any old deeds exist. I wrote a graphic short story about about my Great Great Grandfather who I believe was born there http://www.francescastle.com/Sherwins-Cottage

I'm not exactly sure when your house would have been built, I guess the 12 acres was sold off to developers around the turn of the century who built Sherwin Street etc.

Hi I've found this marriage on the IGI

William Sherwin marries Amy Robinson

25 NOV 1799      Shelford, Nottingham, England

I'm wondering if William could be one of mine, does anyone have access to Philimores or the Shelford parish records? and wondering if either would give me any more info.
Thanks in advance for any help
Frances

Hi
I've done quite a bit of research on the Collumbells since I first posted the above request.
In fact I've pretty well mapped every Collumbell in Derby into one tree. I have your William on my tree with his children Joseph and Maria except  I didn't have a father for him.
I suspect his father was David bpt 21 Jul 1767  this David was definitely a tailor, I have a son William for him but perhaps I have the wrong William?
I need to look into this a little more.

Hi
If anyone is visiting Matlock and has time I'd be really greatfull for this look up.
The IGI has;
Joseph Sharwin/Sherwin marrying Martha Green
on 26 FEB 1742

I'd really like to know if it states what parish Joseph was from.
Thanks again in advance.

Thanks so much! What kindness, thats really appreciated. I guess at some point the houses were known as Alpha Terrace.
At this point the Sherwins were Malsters, though I'm yet to find out if they had anything to do with the Brewery on the corner of Sherwin St
