Staffordshire / Re: Where can I see original Staffs records?
« on: Sunday 15 September 24 14:10 BST (UK)  »
My ancestors were from Bilston, Sedgeley, Wolverhampton, Cosely, Tipton.

Are copies (scans rather than transcripts) of PRs available online anywhere?

I've previously saved a link to online transcriptions of the PRs of St Leonards in Bilston, and I've found a few transcriptions on FreeReg but just can't find much else online. And I can't find the St Leonards link now! Am I missing something somewhere? Or will I need to get myself to the relevant archives, wherever they are?

I have come across St Leonards, Bilston and Sedgley on FreeReg

Thanks for having a look.

It's at times like this, I wish FreeReg could have an option to click all counties in one go to find the person I'm looking for instead of looking up each county.  FreeReg has, "Select one to three (hold Ctrl for multiple)" but for some reason, it has never worked for me...?

William Homer may have been born in another county but he married Esther Emberton on 29 October 1722 at St Mary's, Kingswinford. I'm also looking for records for Esther Emberton and not having any luck in finding her baptism so far...

This is what I have for William Homer and he was buried at St Michael's, Brierley Hill: -

Name   Willm. Homer
Gender   Male
Death Age   79
Birth Date   1700
Death Date   abt 1779
Burial Date   5 May 1779
Burial Place   Brierley Hill, Stafford, England
FHL Film Number   1470582
Reference ID   p18 it1

In Freereg that baptism is transcribed as William Hanose(?) or Hannose.

Yes, I saw that but was actually asking how it was spelt in the original register as handwriting may help give a clue...?

Thanks all.

The surname spelling of Homer/Holmer have disappeared from early 1700s and I'm seeing more spelling variation such as Homus, Hemus.... going further back in the Kingswinford area, Staffordshire.

I wonder if anyone could make out the surname spelling of William's baptised on 19 April 1705 to parents:  Edward and Mary at St Mary's, Kingswinford?  ???

Hi,

The further I go back in researching my Family Tree in Worcestershire and Staffordshire... I'm seeing how the surname Homer revolves from Holmer... going further back, I'm seeing Homes, Hemus, Homus and Hems but no more "Homer/Holmer."

I have tried looking up on the internet but all it tells me is that Homer came from Greek era.

I'm left wondering if Homer/Holmer have revolved from Homes, Homus, Hemus... during the 1600/1700s, does anyone know?

Any answers will be very much appreciated.

Thanks for explaining as I had thought if one spouse was buried then a space would automatically be reserved for his/her spouse/children if they had not remarried/married or chose to be buried elsewhere as I thought the grave would have already been paid for, from the first burial regarding number of burial plots at the same gravestone as that was the case with my Grandad, Nan and their unmarried son.

Ancestry - Parish Registers - Deaths & Burials - Oldswinford, Worcestershire .... Image

Thanks and it was working well until I came across these for the same person, Jesse Homer born: 17 December 1797 and he appears to have been buried in two different places!  The first one, which I believe to be correct as this is in Stourbridge.

The second one down mentions him having being buried at Holy Cross Pershore and Saint Andrew Pershore, Worcestershire, England, which surely cannot be correct?? ???

The further I go back in my family tree (1700-1800s) I'm seeing my ancestors being buried in separate places, the men seemed to have been buried at Brierley Hill and their wives buried at Oldswinford or Kingswinford.

Is this common or is it because I've not yet found a record for one of the spouses being buried at the same place as their deceased spouse?
