Armed Forces / Re: Does Pay Book contain everything that is in service record?

Hello Dyingout,
I am "of a certain age" myself  ;D

But thank you for the useful information.

Hello Dyingout,
Thank you for your response.
In your case, the full service record clearly contains information regarding the dates not covered by the book.
My father's book covers his entire service from enlistment to discharge; if I can learn nothing new from ordering his record from the Army Personnel Centre, I have other things to spend £30 on.

Armed Forces / Does Pay Book contain everything that is in service record?
« on: Friday 23 July 21 10:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I have my late father's Pay Book from WWII. I also have his discharge certificate, and a typed slip of paper giving his medal entitlement. This last includes the dates of his service in India, Assam and Burma.
My question is this: if I order his full service record, am I likely to find more detailed information about his service?
Thanks for any help.

Denbighshire / Re: Samuel Jones
« on: Thursday 17 September 20 15:27 BST (UK)  »
It's worth bearing in mind that Civil Registration started in 1837 - so it's possible that Samuel's parents marriage, or the birth of any older siblings, would be in parish or nonconformist records. And there are cases where the church records continue after 1837.

And if you are still following the connection with Liverpool, have you considered that the Hugh Jones listed there is Samuel's brother? And that Samuel might not have been an orphan - he was old enough at 12 to have left school and joined the thousands of Welsh people who moved to Liverpool to find work. Younger people would normally be lodged with relatives.

Good luck - it's conundrums like this that keep me engrossed in this subject.

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / Re: Penygaer, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr
« on: Saturday 27 June 20 15:13 BST (UK)  »
Wesley,
I have just done a Google search for Pen y Gaer Llanfihangel and came across your post from last year.
My 5xGreat grandparents William Hughes and his wife Catherine (nee Myddleton) lived there in the 1770s. Their daughter Dorothy was born there in 1772, possibly Jane in 1783 and Roberts in 1781. During this period, the couple had other children including my 4xGGF Hugh who were born elsewhere in Llanfihangel and Cerrigydrudion area (I'm still trying to work this all out from the parish records).
I hope this is useful to you

Denbighshire / Re: One parish in two counties

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Stanmapstone: Your information is interesting, because I used information from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) which states that Llanfihangel GM has a part in both counties.

KGarrad: Thank you for that information about Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.

I'll bear all that in mind as I plough on with my search.

Thank you for your interest Rosie.
My only interest in this particular marriage is the fact that it refers to the same parish spanning two counties - I am actually researching a different couple who were married some years later in the same parish.

Denbighshire / One parish in two counties
« on: Friday 12 June 20 11:02 BST (UK)  »
On Find my Past I have discovered a Banns book for the county of Denbighshire that is not identified by parish. As it contains a potential ancestor of mine, I started to read the book from the beginning to try to identify which parish it belonged to.
On an entry for 25 May 1760 I found:
"David Thomas Yeoman of this parish in the county of Merioneth and Elizabeth Thomas spinster of this parish in the county of Denbigh".
This confirmed my hope that the book is from Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr parish, but before I jump to too many conclusions, were there other parishes that spanned the two counties?

Thank you

Denbighshire / Re: Margaret Lloyd b circa 1782 Derwen(?)
« on: Friday 12 June 20 09:59 BST (UK)  »
Huwcyn,
The area you are looking is in the historic county of Denbighshire, but borders onto Merionethshire, so you may find relatives in both counties.
And here is one that I found that might fit the bill:

Margaret Lloyd
Baptism date   27 Aug 1786
Place   Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd
County   Denbighshire
Country   Wales
Father's first name(s)   Thomas
Mother's first name(s)   Elizabeth
