Donald Macleod and Jessie Campbell are my 3x great grandparents. Their daughter, Catherine, is my line. She married Peter Gilmour in Cromarty. I have a photo of the two of them sitting outside their cottage.

Not much help, as I don't know much more than what you've already found on James.

Looks like there are many Frasers in Killearnan who were known by that by-name. Various spellings Uirach, Uirrach, Uarach, Uarrach, dating from 1761 to 1804.

My guess would be they were originally from Urray or Orrin, much like the Hearachs (of Harris) and the Sgitheanachs (of Skye).

Unfortunately the meaning of the name is probably lost in time.

Hi Iain,

Thank you for your response. I had located John's death since I posted that, but appreciate your assistance nonetheless.

Thanks for the book suggestion.

Interesting to read about your Kirkhill Macdonald ancestors. Some of my Clachnaharry Macdonalds were buried at Kirkton of Bunchrew, including Sween Macdonald b. 1741 d. 1828, married to Janet Mackay. I have at least three Sween Macdonalds in my tree. Fascinating to hear of your MacQueen alias!

Hi Skoosh, i have only just noticed your comment. Urray was a great help thanks. I have found much more info on my Cowans after looking into the Glasgow poor relief records. I think you're correct, Maggie did live and work in Strathpeffer. My great uncle gave me a copy of a photo he said is Catherine Grant, Mary Cowan, and an unknown boy outside the cottage in Orrinside.

That's really great to see the plans for Fairburn Tower. It'll be interesting to see it restored.

Cheers,
Alasdair

I have an ancestor Jane, on her marriage entry it said she was the daughter of James Fraser of Ardronich.

I spent quite a while trying to locate Ardronich, and found this Lovat Estate map very useful https://maps.nls.uk/view/188056061

Seems to be many variations in spelling, and on this occasion it is Ardrynich.

Thanks Skoosh. I’ll try contacting Glasgow City Archives for any advice they can give, but hopefully Urray knows something.

Skoosh and urray. I have a connection to the Grants of Orrinside...

My great-grandmother Mary Cowan, and her sister Maggie Cowan, were both born 'illegitimately' in Maryhill Glasgow 1907 and 1906. In 1911 they were living with their grandfather Donald Cowan, originally from Southend, Argyll. By August 1914 they were admitted into Marybank school, and Miss C Grant of Orrinside is given as their guardian. I believe she is Catherine Grant, daughter of Roderick Grant and Anne Gray.

Mary Cowan grew up at Orrinside before getting married and settling in Cromarty. I don't really know why two girls from Glasgow, with Argyll relations, ended up at Orrinside. It appears they were fostered just as the First World War was starting. Their mother Maggie was still alive in 1932, married and working as a hospital nurse.

I just thought I'd share that with you in case you might be able to help fill in the gaps. Are you aware of Catherine Grant?

Hi Darryl,

Sorry to resurrect this old topic, but I believe it may be relevant to my own family. My g-grandmother Jamesina was a Cameron from the Black Isle. She is a descendant of a Duncan Cameron from Balnabeen, who married Hellen Munro in 1777. I wondered if what you suggested might be true, that the same Duncan Cameron married two Munro sisters. Have you discovered anymore regarding this?

My line goes as follows...

i. Duncan Cameron of Balnabeen m. Hellen Munro on 17 Apr 1777

ii. Ann Cameron b. 19 Jan 1783 - d. 22 Dec 1865 at Knocknafanaig (Unmarried)

iii. Margaret Bisset of Knocknafanaig b. 7 Dec 1812 ("bastard daughter to Evan Bisset in Bogbuie and to Ann Cameron in Wellhouse") m. John Cameron of Newton on 22 Feb 1839

    - John Cameron was born in Lochalsh (not a Black Isle Cameron) Abt. 1818 according to census data, but I can't find a death cert for him even though he was still alive when Margaret died on 9 Jan 1895 at Woodside, Ferintosh

iv. John Cameron b. Abt. 1847 at Knocknafanaig m. Anne MacDonald b. 22 Dec 1854, at the Free Church Manse of Urquhart in 10 Jan 1879

v. Jamesina Cameron b. 11 Apr 1896 at Garguston, Killearnan m. Alexander MacDonald on 3 Dec 1920 at Mulbuie Glebe

Do you still think this could be the same Duncan Cameron?

Cheers,
Alasdair
