Yes the visit  is great  visited the rose garden and saw the headstone  of John and James.  Also relative Walter who set up  the  Neilson  loco works a lot of  detail s are held in the Mitchell  library.  I did have a quick  look at the 1861 census certainly steel children  are at school  in ayr it looks like  the bird school  was filled  with  relatives. I may be able to  attach  a file  but it's not  possible  on my phone

I an in Glasgow  at the moment  visiting  family  sites I have a family  tree somewhere.  I certainly  have details  os john Neilson s father Walter and his father Walter so that will give a clue.  I've not looked at the steel but they are listed in 1861 ayr census

Hi Did the Steels attend boarding school in Ayr? It looks like it was run by a relative of Mary Baird.

Hi RemLap. My GGGrandad was john Neilson brother of James. I would love any info on him or his brother. I haven't managed to find a photo or portrait. A photo of Oakbank iron foundry would be great. My line is via his second wife Elizabeth Twaddel whose daughter Margaret was my GGandma
many thanks Paul
