I'm sorry but I've given you the wrong name - it should be Victoria Maud Bullen b 18 Sep 1897. She married Thomas Elliott

Hi

I have some information which probably won't help. I noticed that in the 1911 census AM was a drapers assistant. There is an Alice MacFarlane contained in the records of A de Gruchy lodged at the Jersey Archive. De Gruchy was, and still is, a store in St Helier.

There are 3 undated letters but 2 from the address contained in the census, so assume it is the same person. The letters suggest AM had been caught pilfering and the one letter was seeking remorse for her actions, the second suggested the store was not going to report her so thanking them and the third, unsigned from another person, was a letter asking for forgiveness.

The tone of the letters suggest she was deeply apologetic for her actions. Being a small community, I suspect she either changed her name (unlikely) or left the island or both.

The grave is in St Saviours New Cemetery, grave number 48, row 3. I'll try and look over the weekend.

Hi All

Yes it is Ethel Knowlson Sep 1885 Bromyard 6a 529. You will see that on the top of the certificate they have typed 1855! It should be 1885 as per the entry on the certificate. I had already seen this but forgotten when I typed up this query.

Mary Jane Knowlson was a waitress from Devonport (Plymouth) the daughter of a Royal Navy Sea Captain. I'm guessing that because the child was illegitimate the birth took place away from home. Certainly, MJK was in Devon in 1851 and again in 1861 however the child, Ethel born in 1855, never went to her mother's home but was cared for by a family in Newton Abbot.

There appears to be no family connections with Herefordshire as far as I can tell.

Hi

I have a birth of Ethel Knowlson born 12th June 1855.

It gives the place of birth as Croped Hedge, Linton, Hereford.

I can't find any details about Croped Hedge. Is it a place or a house or ....?

Ethel was illegitimate so it could well be a home. Can anyone help?
