I can trace my family of alexander herschels back to 1750 he married an Agnes stot in 1767 Brechin Angus. There were then four generations of Alexander Herschel. It's a family name. Each one of those alexanders had brothers, I wouldn't be surprised if they would call one of their sons Alexander after their father? Montrose is all around the same area logie pert is the first registered birth of an Alexander Herschel, probs cousins way back, all displaced from the area around the same time and having to fend for themselves moved south growing further apart?
If you go on wikitree you can see all the sons the original Alexander had, perhaps there is a link.

He was Glasgow born I believe but his father Alexander who married a Jane baldy was from Perth,.
I don't think they were travellers more displaced with highland clearance and industrialisation forced off their lands

Alexander Herschel was my great great grandfather, story was he was kicked out by his family when he was 21 became a shepherd and settled in Newcastle working for a wool company. That's what my granda said.
