Clare / Re: how to contact Clooney parish
« on: Wednesday 11 July 07 13:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi Chicabee,I wonder if you made contact with the parish of Quin & Clooney? They are notorious for not answering letters,or taking many weeks to do so.Anyway for what it is worth the address is The secretary,Parish House,Quin,Co.Clare,Ireland.
I think the problem is that there is only one volounteer member of staff. The last reply I had from them took 7 weeks.
Best of luck with your research.

Hi Christopher,Wow you certainly have put some interesting Mills material my way.The parents of William G Mills as you say were Thomas Mills and Jane Gill.Jane was the 2nd.wife of Thomas who had previously been married to Alice McDonald or Alecia Mcdonell who sadly died. This couple had at least two children John, born Belfast and Margaret born Co.Down.Now my own Gt.X 3 grandfather was Joseph Mills a tinman & brazier and he appears to have been born in Co.Down circa 1815/18.I believe,I can put it no higher than that, that Joseph was a 3rd.child of the marriage of Thomas Mills & Alice McDonald.I have documentary evidence to show Thomas Mills was the father of my Gt.X 3 grandfather,I just need to find Joseph's birth record for the final proof.
Once again Christopher my thanks for your help with this search, you have been fantastic.
Best regards

Hi Christopher,Thanks for your reply once again,I was aware of the genforum message as I am in very close touch with Elizabeth Nichols the author of that particular thread.I am quite convinced that the origins of the Mills family do lie in the travelling community. One problem we have is that it is possible that there are in fact 2 Mills families, possibly cousins who share the same names,in particular the names of Joseph,Thomas, and Sarah, but we are slowly getting there. Thanks for your help once again Christopher it is very much appreciated.

Clare / Clune Family of Co.Clare
« on: Thursday 22 February 07 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have a record of an Anne Clune marrying a John Mannox on the 2/12/1824 at the parish of Quin and Clooney.
I believe that the spelling Mannox is an error and that it should be Mannix. If anyone out there has any knowledge of this marriage,or of the Clune or Mannix families of that period I would very much like to hear from you.
Thank you.

Hi Suz,Many thanks for taking the trouble to look up my Mills ancestors.First of all yes, that is the family I am talking about, but it is possible I may have misled you.I know all about the family once they arrived in England, the information I am looking for is about the family in Ireland,in Newry,in Co.Down generally and before 1838.
Once again please accept my thanks for your efforts,it really is very much appreciated.

Further to my earlier posting I now believe that the wife of Joseph Mills was Elizabeth Elliott the daughter of a shoemaker,I further believe that Sarah Mills the couples daughter was born in Newry in 1837.The family left Ireland for England about 1838/39.
Any and all information most gratefully received.
Thank you

Down / Tinmen and Braziers of County Down
« on: Saturday 25 November 06 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Further to my request for information on the Mills family of Newry I am now aware that this family was quite widespread throughout Co.Down and probably Antrim also.
The main occupation of the family appears to have been as tinmen & braziers, and also ironmongers.
The family had connections with Whitehaven,Cumberland and also with the Isle of Man.
Any information on this family will be most welcome.
Thank you and regards

Lancashire / Re: James Boyd

Hi Claudia,I thought I would give you an update on my search for Catherine & Louisa.
I am by no means at the bottom of it yet but progress has been substantial.
I have a 2nd.cousin whom I have never met,(I am 65 now)my 2nd.cousin is the grandson of Catherine. It took me months to trace him and he was amazed at my question.
It seems he has 3 sisters and they all know of Catherine as Catherine Boyd, this has caused much dissent in their family because many years ago my cousin had been told either by his mother or by Catherine herself,he wasn't sure who, that Catherine had been born Catherine Boyle, not Boyd, the 3 sisters were not aware of this and would not have it.
Armed with this new information I searched the birth indexes for the girls and found them very easily.Their parents,my gt.grandparents were James Boyle & Mary (nee Doran).I can find no marriage cert.for the couple so it appears they were not married.James Boyle was born in Ireland in 1841 (no county, town,or parish is mentioned) Mary had been married previously to a John Whitehead, and they had a daughter named Mary J Whitehead.James Boyle and Mary also had another daughter named Mary who was born in 1877,I was completely unaware of her existence. At this time that is as far as I have got,but I still have no explanation for James Boyd or as to why the girls took his name on their marriages rather than their own father's name.
Sorry to be so long winded but I thought you deserved a detailed run down since you were right with your theory.
Best wishes
