Lancashire Lookup Requests / Birth and/or baptism record - John TATTERSALL
« on: Thursday 20 April 17 15:43 BST (UK)  »
I am struggling to find a birth or baptism (or possibly death) record for my gg grandfather John Tattersall born either 1849 or 1850 in Tunstead Mill, Lancs (from 1871 census). His marriage certificate (to Pathana YEADON in 1869) states his father was Richard Tattersall, a cotton overlooker. John's occupation on marriage was cotton minder.  I can find no verifiable record of him after this census (nor verifiable previous census record without mother's name). His wife is living with her mother and daughter in 1881 census but status is married not widow, and she is listed as Head of household with her daughter and her sister at 1891 census. Their daughter's marriage certificate in 1894 shows her father's occupation as lighthouse keeper and I have records of a John Tattersall who is a labourer marrying in Salford in 1877 and emigrating to Western Australia where he worked as a lighthouse keeper until his death in 1926. I'm trying to join the dots to see if they are actually the same person.  :-\
Any help much appreciated!  :)

Thanks. I thought there might be details of the inscriptions on the grave, such as parents names for the children, as I think they are the grandchildren of the adults buried in that grave, but I previously only knew about the eldest child. Any idea if/where I might be able to find out?  I have all the census records of they Yeadons but the Tattersall children (apart from Elizabeth) do not appear on any census records as they died too young.

I recently located details on Lancs OPC website (http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Rossendale/Stacksteads/waterbarn/graves_1847-2012.html) of a grave at the above church in which are buried members of Tattersall (Elizabeth, Sarah and Ada)and Yeadon (Margaret and Thomas) families. Any further information would be very much appreciated.
Thanks very much,
Shelley in Western Australia.

Thanks very much!  :)
And I am a very proud Aussie - 2nd generation on one side and 3rd on the other - so not likely to want to emigrate but if I win the lottery I will come and visit! :D

Thanks so very much for your help.  :) That map is great and it makes sense because my great grandfather was a lay Methodist preacher and Sunday school teacher, and both locations are close to the Methodist Chapel. Also interesting to look at the Google image of the area today. One son, Charles Alfred died in a mining accident at Cambois colliery in 1911. My grandfather was also working there as a 12 year old. I am thinking that once his son was killed, Charles thought it would be better to move the family to sunnier climes and they emigrated to Western Australia in 1912. Thanks again. :)

Grandfather's name was Robert William PEGGS. He was born in 1895. In 1901 census they are living at 40 John St West in Cowpen (RG13 Piece4813 Folio172 Page18 Sched105) so I am thinking that they were living in Maxwells Buildings in 1895 or maybe a midwife lived at Maxwells Buildings?
