Family History Beginners Board / Re: Don't be deceived - Research isn't always easy!

I've been researching my family for thirty years - and have just discovered an uncle that no one told me about!  A "non-person". I know they did that sort of thing in Stalin's Russia, but this is ridiculous.

The DROWER family ( from Dreux ) arrived in England in about 1700, presumably at Lyme Regis, and promptly settled down in and around Axminster, where they remained for the next two hundred years. It seems reasonable to suppose that, unless they already had relatives in England, they simply set up home close to where they landed. The terrible state of the roads would in any case have discouraged further travel. The Dure family appear to follow the same pattern

I'm afraid that you have real problems with the Sidbury records.
Early in the 19th century the Sidbury vicar took all the parish registers home with him. That night his house caught fire and all the registers were destroyed.
As to the whereabouts of surviving Sidbury parish records you have a choice between two buildings in Exeter. The original records are held at the Devon Record Office, while transcriptions are available at the West Country Study Centre next to the main Public Library in the City Centre. The IGI version is based on those transcriptions.

Some time ago I did some research on a Dartmoor family called HUGH, they then moved to the next village and instantly became the HOW family. It just depended what the vicar heard or thought he heard. During the 19th century many families moved from Devon to South Wales in search of work. The attempts of Welsh vicars to understand Devon accents often totally transformed their names.

The Earl Fortesques of Devon were a prominent aristocratic family with a family home ( Castle Hill ) at Filleigh, just outside South Molton. You should be able to find them in any of the standard reference books on the aristocracy. The house eventually burned down, but I'm not sure when.

All the names mentioned were common in the Essex fishing community where my ancestors were living in the 19th century.
Mehalah was the title of a very popular novel set on Mersea Island, Essex. The Essex answer to Lorna Doone.

Hello Sybella,
Have a look on familysearch and see when the name first appears in England. The huguenots arrived during the 17th century. If there are De la Tours listed much before then they may have been part of a different wave of immigrants. In the 15th century thousands of Flemings came across from present day Belgium. And of course there was a later influx at the time of the French Revolution.

Have you read a report on the inquest? At that time for a case like this the inquest is reported at great length in the local newspapers, sometimes giving information that, for some reason, is not mentioned at the subsequent trial.
