Yes Carol, and she was only three when she was orphaned, brought up by her mother's side of the family and never knew anything about her dad or his family.  She was 70 by the time I found her, and the lovely part is that her first cousins had been looking for her for a long time.

My Dad is her second cousin, she too lives in Australia and we met at CHristmas...and I can see a family resemblance.  My Mum even said she has the same eyes as my Dad's granny (who was her grand-dad's sister).

Were George's parents John McDade or McDaid, and Mary Morgan, by any chance?

OOPS....wrote this whole message using my rootschat CHATROOM name...it is ME, Ninatoo!

Goodness Bankie...how did I manage to NOT thank you for your efforts back in October?  Please accept my belated thanks, as I really appreciate your effort!

Neleh, thanks for the information, I will email my details and see what they come up with.

I visited another site recently and they were saying that Dalbeth is behind locked gates and a big fence, and also that it is now extremely overgrown, which is very sad.  So I guess all of that would make it difficult to find a lair.

Still hoping.....

Hi there,

Just wondering....have you tried the poorhouse records (held at the Mitchell)  for this man?  If he was in need of assistance and accomodation he  may have applied there and been rejected, since he ended up in the Old Man's 'asylum'.

It's a long shot I know, but if he DID apply, you might find out some additional information.  I have found out some amazing details from some poorhouse records.

One Name Studies: A to G / Re: COTTRELL, Staffs, 19th Century

I have  a John Cotterill who came to Scotland from England, possibly Lancashire before 1870.  I can only get back to 1840 with any certainty however, as my family have not yet been found in any of the censuses in England.  The man in question has stated birthplace England on censuses, and one poorhouse record states place of birth as Oldham, Lancashire England.  Oldham didn't even exist when he was born (about 1840-42).

To complicate matters he had one son, Frederick Cotterill, born 1883 in Southampton.  However John had been living in Scotland for at least 13 years by then, and had a number of children born there....then went back to Scotland and had another child by 1886.

So I am thinking...why was he in Southampton when the child was born?  Why go there if rellies were in Lancashire?  Work?  He was a hammerman...but it seems an awfully long way for a Scot to go to get work, so I am thinking family must have been there.  And yet....can't find anyone!!!

So my Cotterills are very elusive and are driving me batty.

Good luck, everyone else!

No not the original, sorry, and I don't know if one still exists.

Thanks for replying,
