Hi all,

Have a lot to do, following up on my mothers research.
Stanhope and Westgate areas as far as l can see.
Anyone else with these names, give me a shout. 😊

This maybe purely coincidence but when my g/parents John Robert Cooper Lowery and Annie Eleanor Howgego married in 1915 one of the witnesses was a Charles Galloway. I also beleive that I have his name in my grans autograph book.

Hi Sue,
I, m directly descended from John Howgego.
Ruth's brother Joseph Jeremiah, is my g/mother Annie Eleanor Howgego,s g/father.
Another brother, William Josiah was born in the village where I live, and baptised in the same church as my children.

I have a lot of info on the Howgego family.
If I can be of any help, ask away.

Hi, I have lived in Marske for nearly 40 years, born in South Bank. I also would assume Shields to be tyneside. Marske Mill is in Saltburn and I,ve not heard of New Mill but will check some books I have. Just had a chat with my wife who is from Redcar and is unaware of New Mill. We have a class on Wednesday and will ask there. My wife see,s Peter,s wife about once a month and she will pass on the query.
Not on topic but my wife was a teacher at Lazenby. Small world.

Hi Sue, and any other interested Em(m)erson searchers;

Back home and searching for papers. Just come across this by chance if you haven't got it already.

Lots of references to Emersons and Stobb(e)s up the dale early 1600,s.
My Mum and Aunty took up my work on the dales ancestors (their families). Emersons, Rutherfords and Stephensons; of  Stanhope, Westgate, Browningside from a quick glance. Everything is still boxed from a house move but gradually getting through it. I will try and put something together before I go back to work on Monday.
By coincidence, going back to earlier in the thread, we are going to see a friend of ours on Tuesday who is a Raine, descended from a family up the dale. Small world.

Best wishes,

Martin

Hi all, just found this thread. Strange but true, I am at my caravan in Stanhope at the moment. I am also descended from Emersons and Rutherfords etc from Weardale. I will be back home at the weekend and see if I have any info of interest to you. As has already been said lots of Emmersons with the same name from here.I was introduced to a local historian by a friend in Stanhope some years ago and she told me there are a lot of volumes of Emmersons in the Durham archives. Not been there for quite a while but another avenue maybe.

Hi Caroline, I am Martin Lowery b1955, Middlesbrough, N Yorks. All this computer FH is very new to me, and to be honest I just put in a search and this thread came up. I suppose I was just excited to find others researching Howgego, which wasn,t the case back in the 80,s. Anyway, my Grandmother(Dad,s mum) Annie Eleanor was born in Stockton 18.11.1891. Going back in order; Edward John Howgego b1848 Whitby; Joseph Jeremiah Howgego b 1826 Newton, Northumberland; John Howgego b 1793 Harwich; Jeremiah Howgego b1752 Bradfield; Jeremiah Howgego b1728 Lawford; Robert Hugegoe b c1700 Lawford. They moved up and down the east coast as Master Mariners,Coastguards, Preventive boatmen and Sailmakers.
Many years ago I made a note of a Mahala Youngs /Howgego that I found at a local LDS library, for no other reason than I,d never come across a Mahala before and wondered if there may be a connection to my Howgego,s. Years later I was contacted by a lovely lady in Wales who also was descended from Howgego,s , and was a distant cousin. In the course of swapping information she sent me a copy of a tree from Australia of a Dr Francis G Smith and his wifes Grandmother was Ada Hannah Howgego b1862 Bradfield d. of a Jeremiah Howgego b 1841 Manningtree, who was the son of Thomas Howgego b 1797 Manningtree and Mahala Youngs b 1805.
Only recently,  through info from this thread and others and subsequently using the computer have I managed to find the link, I hope.  I only have this rough sketched at the moment to try and get it in order, but if Thomas Howgego b 1797 Bradfield is descended from Thomas b 1736 with a Thomas b 1736 Manningtree who marries Eliz Polly in between, the link is  then with Jeremiah b 1728 Lawford and their father is Robert Hugegoe b c1700 Lawford  :)
If you have any info that can prove or disprove this, that would be great. Look forward to hearing from you.
   Regards,
     Martin
