Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Charles and Charlotte Hooper

Wow! What an amazing response. Thank you all so much for your help and suggestions for this. For clarification, Charlotte's surname being Lawton was a suggestion from another family member who has tried to do some research in the past but they may have been mistaken and I think what you have found looks much more likely. Thanks again everyone  :D

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Charles and Charlotte Hooper
« on: Wednesday 28 June 17 13:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I'm looking for some help tracing back from my 4xgreat-grandparents, Charles Hooper and his wife Charlotte. I believe Charlotte's name was Lawton before she was married. I can find them in the 1841 census living at Cricketts Lane, Ashton-under-lyne, Lancashie with their four children Mary, Thomas, Martha and John and two others (Joseph Platt and Elizabeth Platt). there is a later record on the 1851 census of Charlotte Hooper and her son John as paupers in the Union workhouse. I'm struggling to find anything else for Charles or Charlotte so if anyone can help or point me in the right direction I'd be appreciative. Many thanks. Dawn  :)

Lancashire / Amelia Whitehead,Ashton-under-lyne
« on: Thursday 15 June 17 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I'm looking for any help with information regarding my 4xgreat-grandmother, Amelia Whitehead. She was born in Ashton-under-lyne in 1824. Her father's name is George Whitehead on her marriage certificate, where she married William Hulme in St. Marys, Oldham, 22nd October 1843. I can find a record of Amelia in the 1861 (6 John Street, Ashton-under-lyne), 1871 (Bollington Street, Ashton-under-lyne) and 1881 (8 John Street Ashton-under-lyne) census records. I'm struggling to find any details about her mother or siblings or any further details about her father George, which would enable me to go back further. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Kind thanks in advance to all who can help  :D. Dawn

Cheshire / Ousey Family
« on: Tuesday 06 June 17 14:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I'm hoping someone can help me untangle what is starting to look like a messy web! I'm trying to trace a branch of my tree back and I know that my Gx3 grandmother was Henrietta Ousey, born in 1858 in Cheshire (sometimes listed as Dukinfield, sometimes as Stalybridge as the borders changed) and later went on to marry George Bardsley. They had three children, Samuel (1881), Nellie (1884) and Leonard (1888). Trying to get further back than Henrietta is becoming a nightmare. I have found a possible birth record, which lists no father's name but lists the mother as Jane Ousey. However, I have also found what is a likely match on the 1891 census where she is resident at Cross Leech Street, Dukinfield with her three children. the head of the household is Sarah and Henrietta is listed as her granddaughter but is too old to be so, and I think is more likely to be her sister. Ellen Ousey on this census record would then be her mother, and not Jane as is listed in the birth record. The 1871 census also shows Henrietta as a likely sister of Sarah, also at Cross Leech Street but the head of the household is Jane! I'm really rather confused so if anyone can pull the threads apart and make any sense at all I'd be so grateful. Massive thanks in advance to anyone who can help. Dawn

Have you ruled this one out?

Sarah Bradbury
Christening 12 Jan 1840
St. Michael's, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England
Father's Name:   George Bradbury
Mother's Name:   Betty

They also appear to have had a son Squire bn 1846 (March qtr) bapt 1848
(There is another Squire Bradbury bn Sept qtr 1847 just to confuse  ;D  I can see this one on census with father John)

I'm a little unsure about Squire Bradbury. I can find a record of him but his mother is named as Martha Shoesmith. This doesn't tie in with the Betty that may be Sarah's mother.

Thank you so much for your help on this everyone. I've just found details of an 1832 marriage between George Bradbury and Betty Tonge - Tonge ties into one of the census records for Sarah later in life so she could have been staying with family, perhaps after her parents passed. There is a record of a Betty Bradbury passing away in 1848 when Sarah would have only been 12 so it is possible. Thanks again!!  :D

heatherjulie - I had seen that record but initially ruled it out as the birth and christening years were 4 years apart but I think it may be worth some further exploration. Thank you for reminding me of it  :)
