Hi Keith

Thanks for your quick reply and good to be able to make contact through the RootsChat Board.  I'm sending you an email; with Charles and Annie Whitehouse in the subject line.

Regards

Your very comprehensive Whitehouse research has been very helpful to me – thank you Keith.  I’ve cross referenced your tree and notes, with my own recent internet research (BMD’s, Census, etc).  I’ve now collected together and compared this with several non-internet sources: my own notes from the early 70’s; a tree drawn for me by Rene Whitehouse; details from other family members; recently found documents I was given in the 70’s (including Annie’s notebook, certificates and two letters); and family photos from different sources.

If would be helpful, I have further details on the following:

•   If you are not already aware) Charles’s mother Sarah had a younger sister and brother (i.e. Edwin WHITEHOUSE had three children). Charles WH appears as a visitor in Gunthorpe in the 1891 Census at the home Sarah’s sister, Emma SAXBY (c.1854-1909); James died as a teenager (c.1866-1880) – I was told “of fever”.

•   Annie’s POLLIT/GODSALL tree backwards (Ardwick, Manchester & Much Cowarne, Herefordshire).

•   photos (probably from around 1910, 1917) of Charles; his mother Sarah WHITEHOUSE/COOPER; Annie; her father, James POLLITT – some may be copyright; those taken by Charles probably aren’t, as he died in 1922.

I’ve only this month started seriously researching online and noticed this post. I hope the information below on your look-up request is still useful.

From the Certificate - married after banns; Page 95.  56 Park Road Lenton (first letter is quite similar to the L in Lace; matches census addresses).  Father’s details and profession – clear horizontal line across the middle of both boxes (explained to me, after I asked why Charles had taken his mother’s surname).  Annie’s address was 131 Thorpe Road Melton Mowbray. While the 131 is not that clear, this matches 131 on a letter Annie’s mother wrote following her engagement and the 1911 census.  Father’s previous occupations - working backwards - Late Clothier, Clothes Dealer, Broker, Engine Driver and Groom; b. 1841 Ardwick, Manchester; d. 1924 Notts.

The witnesses: Tom Belfield HAYWARD was from Nottingham and married to Florence E FLEWITT.  Mary E[lizabeth] POLLITT was Annie’s older sister (Tizzy), who married in Melton Mowbray a year later.  There were already close links between the WHITEHOUSE, POLLITT and FLEWITT families.  This is clear from letters and a notebook of Annie’s containing birthdays and addresses. 16 Oak Street and 47 Edge Street Manchester were shared addresses, the latter appearing on Annie’s parent’s marriage certificate as their address.

Will continue in a second post ...
