Yorkshire (North Riding) / Scarborough electoral registers
« on: Wednesday 24 January 18 13:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, can anyone confirm if there are electoral registers for Scarborough covering the 1870's and 1880's, and if so, where they can be accessed?

Just as an update, I have been in touch with Crystal City public library (Missouri) who, despite their best efforts (many thanks to Tania Laughlin, Director), were unable to trace any records of the birth.  It seems that at that time, there wasn't a church there (nor any saloons!) but she did provide details of all the Jefferson County Hoods from the 1870 census so there may still be a link somewhere as yet undiscovered.

Hi aghadowey, I was really hoping to try and find a copy of a marriage certificate or at least register entry to see if that showed any additional information such as parents names or even witnesses.

US Lookup Requests / New York marriage 1860
« on: Wednesday 19 April 17 09:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello all, I'm trying to find details of the marriage of John Hood and Frances Bradley in New York on 1st Oct 1860. This information was detailed on the birth register entry of their son David in Tain, Scotland in 1872.
John was born in Rossshire, Scotland and would have been approx. 38 (so it could possibly have been his second marriage but this is purely a guess?) whereas Frances was born in Surrey, England and would have been approx. 24.
I have no definitive information about either of them prior to 1871 at which time they appear on the Scottish census as living in Tain with 3 children, all seemingly born in Grey, Canada. The dates of birth of the children would suggest that, unless they were already resident there, they had moved to Canada by no later 1863 and had emigrated to Scotland around 1869. To date, despite help on this site, I have been unable to locate birth details for any of these 3 children.

Hello both, sorry for late reply

Erato, thanks for the info regarding (both) Crystal City. The only other family name might be Bradley (the maiden name of Franklin's mother, Frances).  As far as I can tell, as Milliepede mentions, Franklin was indeed a mechanical engineer, possibly working with steam engines, which may well have been of use in Crystal City Missouri. I believe they left the UK because he had been declared bankrupt in 1884 and may have been escaping his creditors, so that could of been a great place to lie low for a couple of years. Thank you both once again

Hi manawakian, I got that off David Hood's birth certificate (b 31/12/1872 in Tain, Scotland) who was on that passenger list you found for me

hi Erato,
yes that is my family. Frances was Franklin's mother (note she says she is a widow but I can't trace her husband, John's death even though I confirmed he was at the wedding of Franklin and Mary earlier that year) and David was Franklin's brother. I have to assume they had relatives in Baltimore but am unable to confirm yet  :(
