Kent / Re: Photos? St Clement churchyard, Old Romney - DOWLE family
« on: Wednesday 12 July 23 14:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi OzJen
I have looked at my records and this was my thinking.
Abraham Dowle, b. 1673, and Agnes Hall had two sons named Abraham Dowle baptized in Old Romney in 1702 and 1704.  There are corresponding burials in Old Romney for Abraham sons of Abraham and Agnes.
The Abraham, son of Abraham and Elizabeth (Marketman), was baptized in Lydd in 1708 and there is no corresponding infant burial for Abraham.  So, I concluded that the Abraham who married Susannah Grey was the son of William Dowle and Elizabeth Marketman.
Incidentally the Marketmans were a prestigious family and descended from the Stroughills who were also big in Lydd.
I happened to visit Old Romney back in April and took photos of the three Dowle gravestones under the ancient Yew tree.  You can still read the inscriptions.  Did you manage to get photos you requested a while back?

Hi OzGen
Thank you for your interest.  It is some years since I researched this line in detail and having just got back from holiday I will need a little time to review how I came to the decision I did.  I think the only issue we differ on is the parents of Abraham Dowle who married Susanna Grey.
There were too many Abrahams!

I have two earlier children, John and William born 1829 and 1830.  Neither survived infancy.
I have Mary Elizabeth's baptism, but no further information on marriage etc.
Most of the other siblings I have details of spouses and children.

Have you researched John's wife Elizabeth Barling Lepper's line?  Her father, Henry Lepper, was quite an interesting character.

Just found your message.
Yes you can go back another four generations to Thomas Medgett married to Ann Harrison in Deal in 1662.
This is not the same Thomas Medgett born in Folkestone in 1630. Researchers on Ancestry think they are one and the same, but they can't be as both of them were buried at different times and different places.
The records are at Canterbury Cathedral Archives and many on Find My Past.

My ancestor is also John Dowle.  My original researches came to the same conclusion that he was the grandson of John Dowle and Ann Shearwin  through their son Abraham Dowle and Ann Stevens.  There is an error in the Parish register for Lydd.  In fact John born 1806 was the son of another Abraham and Mary Beaney.  I proved this using the midwife's records and matching them with the parish registers.  I have researched this line back to James Dowle who died in 1686.
