London and Middlesex / Re: Vipond, Vipont - Huguenots?

The Viponds were originally called de Veteripont, (sometimes spelt 'Vieuxpont' (of the Old Bridge) as others have commented.  They arrived in England around the time of the Norman Conquest and were given lands in the North Pennine area originally. They stayed there for many generations, with descendants working in Durham, Newcastle, Sunderland, London and Kendal amongst other areas. The name was gradually modified/corrupted  from De Veteripont to Vipond and/or Vipont (originally pronounced Veepon which is the French pronunciation of Vipond). Branches of the family became Quaker and there are still Quaker Viponds in Cumberland and all over the world. I am descended from them, as well as from Huguenots, with my branch being called Massis (often now seen in England as the Anglicised form, Massey and even Mossey.

Lots of young men moved to London from the North Pennines area, including Alston Moor and Allendale and also including one of my Ancestors, Joseph Vipond, eldest son of Joseph Vipond of Alston Moor. The Viponds were a Yeomanry farming family and would be classed as 'comfortable'  Joseph junior moved to the Quaker community in London, mainly around Southwark.  This was a booming area at the time. There were lots of Quakers in London, nearly all in business, cordwainers, skinners, etc.  The Viponds main traditional family names(appearing throughout the generations) were Joseph, Thomas, Richard, an occasional William and the girls were predominantly Sarah, originating with Sarah Wallas of Allendale who married Joseph Vipond of Alston Moor in a Quaker marriage in May 1689.

Northumberland / Re: Rowell family

There Rowells lived at The Woodhead, Allendale.  They were Quakers in the seventeenth century.  One of my seventeenth century ancestors, Joseph Vipond of Alston Moor married Sarah Wallas of Allendale at The Woodhead, Allendale. I have a copy of the marriage 'certificate' which gives the names of all attendees, most of whom are from Allendale (often spelt Allendaile at the time). Quakers had been persecuted up to 1689 and Joseph Vipond and Sarah Wallas married at the time of the Toleration Act (1689).  Allendale inhabitants first became Quaker in around 1653 following the preaching of travelling Quakers in the area (who also called themselves 'The first publishers of Truth'). I believe that it is extremely likely that this is the same Rowell family you are studying.  To find your earlier family history it is important to concentrate on Quaker Records (Family search - Mormon Website is free), whilst Ancestry has lots of Quaker records. You would need to search circa 78 yrs from around 1653 to 1729. I am doing a PhD in this, my own family history.
