It is interesting that both families have the same story.   I cannot trace any Compton- Cooks before William (1837) but like you, I keep coming back to it.

My Great grandmother was their daughter Elizabeth Caroline Cracknell.  How are you connected?

William Compton Cook was also my Great  Great Grandfather.    I have the same information as you, on one record it says he was born in Chipping Campden, another says he was born in Norfolk.

According to my family, he was somehow connected to Compton Wynyates in Warwickshire and Cook is the name of the people that raised him.    I have not been able to find any information to verify this.

I have done some research into Miriam Trapnell's family and her grandmother was one of the first women to be transported to Australia as a convict.   If you would like more info, let me know.
