Hello Ken,
I had read a post elsewhere suggesting Edward son of Michael and Jane was baptized in Avoca,County Wicklow.
I include a link below to County Carlow listing farmers liable for tithes [ church tax ].Laurence Gittins is mentioned.
 http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=gittins&firstname=&county=&parish=&townland=&search=Search
Extended family in the same parish using the Gittens spelling are in the link below.

The surname in Ireland is common in counties Mayo and Sligo where families alternate between Gettins and Gethins.

Percy Gethins is mentioned for county Sligo. He descends from Sir Richard - see below.

The Gethings spelling is most common in county Donegal and also in Carlow and Wexford.

Hi Ken,

It is my understanding that the Gittens family of Carlow - Kilkenny Ireland are a native irish family - is there evidence of Cheshire origins?.

Hi
My source was the Tithe Applotement Records surviving from 1825.The townland is in Donegal parish and had eleven households including the three McCools and also Owen Galespy [Gillespie].

I have very little on this family - just scribbled notes - As a matter of interest did Joseph son of Michael serve with the NY Police.

Hi Wendy,
I suspect that your Michael McCool and his wife originated in Donegal Parish,Donegal County. This parish had three McCool families in 1825 - Michael,Edward and James all on adjoining farms. Also two McGettigan[Gatins] Patrick and Denis on adjoining farms.
