Lanarkshire / Mitchell Library - Lookup possible, please?
« on: Wednesday 28 June 17 10:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello all

I'd hoped that I'd managed to track down a shadowy GG-GF to the City Workhouse in Glasgow. His death certificate details are:

- William Green, born Glasgow, aged 44 years (born 1813 or 1814) died in the City Workhouse, Glasgow, on 18th April, 1858
- Recorded as pauper, currier, and married
- He was seen / diagnosed the previous day (17th) and his death was registered the following day, the 19th
- Buried at Sighthill cemetery

There appears to be a record for someone very similar (D-HEW 10/5/16/2, p. 547) but the birth date doesn't quite match (1808). The only other two records I have of him are the censuses in 1841 and 1851 and both tally for the birth year (1813/14).

It had been my intention to check the records out in person but a dislocated ankle has put paid to that idea for the time being  :-X

I wondered if any kind soul had plans to visit the City Archives at the Mitchell Library sometime soon(ish) and would be kind enough to jot down a few details for me?  ;)

Many thanks

Alex

"Also Girsael is a very odd name. No idea if it's male of female."

This *might* be a variation on Grisel, Grizel, or Grizell, (etc)

If it is, it's a female name which is, I believe, derived from Griselda

I have a few of these names in my Scottish lines

Could it be 'Jobie' as in a pet name of Job? There is a christening registration for 19th February 1871, York / Guisborough for Job Taylor Miles at FamilySearch. It would tie in with what appears to be a birth date of January 26th, 1871 on the card (possibly!)

Jobie is also, though a little unusual, a girl's name

Lanarkshire / Re: Divorce records
« on: Wednesday 08 March 17 18:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I discovered a divorce that I hadn't known about after purchasing a marriage certificate from Scotland's People. The certificate itself contains a stamp in the first column indicating that the couple subsequently divorced. You will also receive details of the divorce as a free image

(Incidentally, this divorce also occurred in 1919)

Also, both of their death certificates were marked 'Divorced' as neither had remarried

Hope that helps

Alex

I haven't seen the times and dates you mention, Jonw65 - perhaps it depends on your current or previous subscription type - UK or worldwide??

My suggestion was taken from the bottom of the recent Ancestry email:

*Access to the records in the featured collections will start on 18 February and will be free until 20 February, 2017 at 23:59 BST. After the free access period ends, you will only be able to view the records in the featured collections using an Ancestry.co.uk paid membership. To see a full list of the records in the featured collections please click here.

BST is currently GMT in the UK

Hello StanleysChesterton

I 'think' the offer starts tomorrow - Saturday - and lasts until Monday at 23.59

Hopefully, you'll be able to access the records you'd like after midnight tonight
