Armed Forces / Army leave in 1890s
« on: Thursday 28 November 24 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, the service record of one of my ancestors (South Lancs Regiment) shows him serving abroad for just over six years between 1887 and 1893, in the Straights Settlements, Gibraltar, Malta and Egypt.

Would he have returned home to England at all during that period? I'm trying to understand if he could have fathered a child with his future wife while stationed at Gibraltar. I had assumed it was impossible but want to be sure.

Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1665 burial - English and Latin
« on: Friday 08 November 24 12:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, the fourth entry down on the attached image - 'Mary the good old wife of Richard Styringe a shepherd'

Can anyone help interpret the two lines beneath this. I think I know what English says, I'm wondering what it means and if the Latin below is related.

Many thanks

PS - a poignant name for the illegitimate child in the first entry...

The Lighter Side / What was a "toss of the coin" dance?
« on: Tuesday 23 January 24 21:22 GMT (UK)  »
I found a newspaper report of a village dance in 1936 and it mentions a "toss of the coin" dance being won by a couple.

This is perhaps a silly question - but what exactly does that mean?

They seem to be mainly next to the Ash family, though having had another look there are other marks, against people named Ash and others. I think you could be right about family history research - and they do look later.

In the parish register of Chesterfield there are marks (which look like a V) next to many entries related to the Ash family. Baptisms, marriages and burials.

Does anyone have an inkling what marks such as this might mean? The family weren't poor; they were butchers, tanners and some were aldermen.

Thank you

Can anyone suggest where this photograph was taken?

My great grandfather was in the Royal Field Artillery (4th West Lancs Howitzer Brigade). I believe they were based in Liverpool and before embarking for France in 1915 spent time in Kent.

I don't recognise the place and I know the Liverpool area well.

Thank you

This may be a long shot - does anyone recognise the location(s) in these photos?

Two are on a beach, close to some hills, with a stepped sea defence. The other is in front of a panorama with what looks like a tidal area of water.

These relatives lived in Liverpool so I've assumed it's North Wales. The two places may not be in the same area.

Thank you

Thank you all for your replies - you've been so helpful.

Given what you've said I think this must be a photo from my grandad's earliest years in the army - he joined aged 15 in 1939. He was in the RAOC.

I had wrongly assumed it was his father and uncles' generation.

Looking at it again I think I can see a boy who may be my grandad - it's quite difficult to be sure because I don't have many photos of him from this period!

Hello, can anyone help me date the attached photograph?

I've always assumed it was connected to relatives who were in the army around the time of the Great War.

I've included a close-up in case the cap badges help.

Thank you
