No luck using your dates at the library I'm afraid  What I did find was a Roberts family living in Mount Pleasant, Conwy on the 1861 Census which was a year before William died. The William on the 1861 Census in Conway was born 1847 at Bangor, occupation sailor and his father John was born 1812 at Amlwch, Anglesey but was a Engine Driver. As we know the Roberts family living at Roberts Street Bangor are still there in 1861, so I think they are two completely different families. There are quite a lot of William Roberts buried at the cemetery so could you give me the plot number so that a can check it with the list. Also does it state his age on the death certificate?

Hi! I can't believe I have only just seen this, I really hope you still come online! Williams plot number was 223. On his death certificate it states he was 15 years old if i remember rightly, but that was incorrect, he was 16 years old when he died. The reason it was mixed up (i presume) is because he died on the month of his birthday. He turned 16 and then died a few weeks later.

I've searched for William Roberts for years and I've just found a potential connection to him, Richard Thomas?

There's a census for 1861 with:

Richard Thomas / Head / 40 / Hairdresser born in Ruthin, Denbighshire

Catherine Thomas / Wife / 40

Ann Thomas / Niece / 25 / House Servant

William Roberts / Apprentice / 15 / Hairdressing Apprentice


William died when he was 16 years old and I have always thought he was a tailor, but then I found this and wondered if there is any way that I can find out where Richard and William worked? If it was a shop in their town? Or if there's pictures etc?

I'm soooo close, yet so far!!

Three generations of Palmer-Douglases went on to live at Cavers. James Palmer-Douglas, grandson of Mary and Edward, was born in 1922, and by the time he inherited the estate it was just 5,000 acres following the sales of farms at Denholm and Spital. Cavers was a so-called ‘entailed’ estate, which meant while the owner could look forward to his descendants being masters of the property for the foreseeable future, it was extremely difficult to sell any of the land. Changes in the law allowed them to sell portions off. James later recalled: “I went to war at the age of 20 in the Royal Air Force, and when I left the services I was in no mood to go to university to study estate management.” During WWII the mansion housed members of the Women’s Land Army.

I think I've seen this before and it's abit confusing! I think these people lived in the Cavers Castle. But the property I have seen is on the borders and it is an 11 bedroom house! It's on YouTube too
