Ah, what do you think about the following:

Code: [Select]
Registration district: Auckland
Sub-registration district: Bishop Auckland
ED, institution, or vessel: 11a
Household schedule number: 204
Piece: 2385
Folio: 191
Page Number: 54

It lists his place of birth as 'Shull' which doesn't come up on google maps. However, it seems that Shull was a name associated with Hamsterley (see here http://www.hamsterleyvillage.com/history-2/the-blacketts/).

His father is listed as Robert and is an agricultural labourer - I think this could include a wagon wright (or he may have progressed to it at the point of Joseph's marriage).

Anthony White had married Mary Ann Thompson, Jun qtr 1858 Weardale.

Ah, good find. I think I'll search for a Joseph Thompson, son of Robert and Mary-Ann.

Have you traced the 14 yr old Joseph Thompson who is a son in law (stepson) of Anthony White (b 1818, victualler) at the Queen's Head, Wolsingham in 1861 - to see who his natural father was?

1861: RG9/3727/28/9

I did see that entry during my initial research but didn't pursue further but maybe I should have a look.

Between 1844-1846 there were only 4 births registered for Joseph Thompson in either Weardale or Auckland RD - 2 in each RD.  No corresponding deaths pre-1851

However - failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/75 so his birth may not have been registered

Thanks, if, when ordering the certificate, I specify that I only want a certificate where the father's name is Robert, what will happen if there is more than one such birth certificate? Also, will I be charged if no certificate is found? I couldn't see the answers to these queries online.

If you believe the father to be Robert, only ask for birth certificates that meet that criteria.

Conversely, have you found any Robert Thompsons (with or without Joseph) in any censuses who are waggon wrights?

Oh good idea, didn't know that you could do that!

Hi

I'm looking for the birth certificate of a Joseph Thompson, born around 1845 in County Durham. The following is his 1865 marriage certificate to Hannah Clarkson: https://imgur.com/a/IVNi4

The following are census results which show him living with Hannah:
1871 - https://imgur.com/a/BZOZ5
1881 - https://imgur.com/a/xLHFV

The dates on the censuses and marriage certificate are pretty consistent as to his age; Joseph appears to have been born around 1845 (give or take a couple of years). The 1871 census shows his place of birth as Wolsingham but the 1881 census shows Hamsterley - these are only a couple of miles away so I'm not worried by this inconsistency.

I've struggled to find any earlier censuses with Joseph listed (with his father, Robert, listed). There are a few census results with a Joseph Thompson born in the surrounding areas but the dates and Robert's occupation don't seem to tie up.

I've also struggled to find his birth entry - unsurprisingly there are many 'Joseph Thompson' entries born around 1845 in County Durham. Hamsterley is in the Auckland RD whilst Wolsingham is in the Weardale RD.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Tom

Northumberland / How do I purchase copies of Northumberland parish entries?
« on: Monday 18 December 17 20:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm looking to purchase a copy of a baptism entry in a Northumberland parish (I have the name of the parish, name of the child, name of the parents and the year of birth).

I believe that the Northumberland Records Office is located at http://www.experiencewoodhorn.com/. However, it's not obvious to me which (if any) service I can use to purchase a baptism entry.

Would anyone who has had experience with this, please point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Hi again :)

In 1841 there is a Francis (image shows female) HOLMES age 4 living in the same household as John, Henrietta, Isabella etc.  In 1861 she is shown as Fanney HOLMES  b.1837 Stanhope, Durham a daughter of John and Henrietta HOLMES.

In 1851 she is Frances b.1837 Stanhope, Durham, shown as niece to John and Jane MADDISON, their children born after 1837 show mmn as GLEASON.

There are some online trees that show John MADDISON married Jane GLEASON in 1835 in St John's Chapel, Durham and that John HOLMES married Sarah GLEASON in 31 MARCH 1832 St. Johns Chapel, Weardale. The two women being sisters. I think it's always best to use this info as a hint then check it for yourself :)

I can't get full info but there does seem good possibilities to confirm these marriages using Durham Records Online, a John MADDISON gets married in Weardale in 1835 as does a Jane GLEASON and a John HOLMES abode Chester-Le-Street gets married in Weardale in 1832 as does a Sarah GLEESTON.

Frances/Fanney could be the daughter of John and Sarah,

Durham Records Online

Fanny HOLMES
POB:  Shittlehopeburn

Ancestry
Fanny HOLMES
Baptism Date:  12 Feb 1837
Baptism Place:  Stanhope, Durham
Parents:  John & Sarah

There is this burial which could be Sarah,

Birth year:  abt 1814
Abode:  Shittlehopeburn, Stanhope

Ancestry/Findagrave
Sarah HOLMES

Then John HOLMES marries Henrietta ROBINSON nee. REATHER.

So my theory is that Frances/Fanney HOLMES b.1837 to John HOLMES and Sarah GLEASON marries Joseph THOMPSON in 1862,

Joseph THOMPSON    Dec Q 1862    Weardale    10a  342
Fanny HOLMES

and it is their daughter Frances THOMPSON b.1871 that is the niece of Robert and Isabella HEPPLEWHITE  in 1881 as Frances HOLMES b.1837 was a half-sister to Isabella HEPPLEWHITE nee ROBINSON :)

OK now my eyes are doing this :D, I think I'll go now  ;D

Regards,
Daisy

Wow, that's really impressive! Thanks for all your help, it really is appreciated.

Hi

Can anyone make out James Robson's place of birth (surrounded with a red box) in the following: https://imgur.com/a/QI8EY? Ancestry has transcribed it as Darley but I can't find any place in Northumberland with this name.

Many thanks

Tom
