Chipping have a local history Society, that meet
in St Marys Village Hall, they can be contacted through
a care of address at Chipping Post Office.
They meet on a Sunday (I think it is the first Sunday
of the Month- but not in the Winter Months)

Thanks - that info could come in very handy.

Well I went to LRO last night and spent about an hour looking up your family. Here is what I found.....

  • Baptisms in Chipping - looked at Nov 1799 to 1808. I couldn't find Edward Helme. However, there were some baptisms missing around 1806 and the 1807/8 records were very faded and hard to read.
  • I did find a baptism for a William Helme son of Edward and Ann Helme of Chipping born 30th April 1801, baptised 20th June 1801. Not sure if William fits into your tree?

  • At St Michaels Church Cockerham - Marriage records
5th Feb 1826 Edward Helme Farmer of parish. married Hannah Woodhouse spinster by banns. He signed she made her mark. The curate was William Armistead, witnesses James Hayes and Thomas Wright. Thomas Wright appeared as a witness on several of the records so he could have been a parish clerk rather than a friend!
  • Baptism records from Caton Church -
8th Jan 1832 Thomas son of Edward & Hannah Helme of Caton. Father's occupation - silk comber. (No longer a farmer or a different couple????)
I couldn't find the other kids baptised at Caton.
At Caton there were several other Helme children baptised whose parents were John and Ann. John was a stone mason. Again not sure if John and Ann fit into your tree anywhere?

I think I might have created a few questions for you!!

Thanks very much for checking for me.   Thomas, the son of Edward and Hannah is definitely my relative.  However whether the Thomas and Hannah who married at Cockerham are the same Thomas and Hannah - who knows.
Back to the drawing board.  Again many thanks.

Do you think that Edward could have married twice?Have you got him on the 1841 census?
I had a look on records and this is what I found Jan 20th 1832 Thomas son of Edward silk combie[I think that what it said]  and Hannah Caton
1835 Ellen daughter  Edward and Hannah

Marriage on the Boyds records and IGI 1826 Edward  Helme  to H annah Woodhouse.

Also a death may be of some use to you William Helme Caton Poorhouse age 62 Nov 2nd 1832

I have since looked on the Free bmd site  1848 death Hannah Helme Hudderfield  1849 Edward Helm marriage Halifax two  Marys Marshall and Lumb

Do you think any of this could fit your family

Dotty
Hi dottie

Many thanks - it looks as though this does refer to my family.  Edward Senr was a Silk Dresser, His son Thomas was born in 1832 with Edward jnr following about 1837.  No mention of Ellen on 1851 census so I assume she must have died. Two other children follow on, John in 1839 and William in 1843 both born in Huddersfield.  Could be that he married again (a bit soon after his first wife's death but I suppose needs must in those days).  I will look into that together with the death in the Caton Poorhouse.  thanks for your help

Thanks very much.  Whenever you go again if you could just have a look and see if the marriage of Edward to Mary is recorded at either Chipping or Caton pre 1835.

I will be looking at the parish records for this areasoon to see if they were married in Yorkshire.

Once again many thanks.

Thanks very much.  Don't suppose you know where the parish records for these two places are kept.

I am trying to trace the birth/baptism of ggg grandfather Edward Helme who, according to the 1851 census, was born 1805/06 in Chipping, Lancs.
He married a lady called Mary ?? from Soyland (Ripponden) Yorkshire and their first child Thomas was born in Caton, Lancashire in 1835 or thereabouts.
As a matter of interest does anyone know where Chipping and Caton are as I have never heard of them.

Thanks

Sorry for the delay .
Emma's great grandfather was my 5xGreat grandfather James Broscomb born @ 1708.
There is a record (that I can't find again) of a James Broxham baptised somewhere on Oct 26 1712 who could be the one but there are records of lots of Broxoms etc in Batley & Birstall from 1640. Before that it appears they were Broxups from Blackburn(?) Lancashire.
Your Broscombes were quite a puzzle since many took the name Mcguire. Your 2 witnesses were i'm sure christened Earnest Leonard Broscomb Mcguire and Anna Beatrice Mcguire.
The Mcguires appear to have changed back to using Broscombe in the 1900s

How strange that theyt would change their name.  thanks anyway for the info.  If if find enything further I will let you know.

this is the only Westman marriage but the father is a William so hear it is

VAUGHAN    Edward
   Wife   Susanna WESTMAN
11 Oct 1847  at    St Nicholas Without  Dublin  Ireland
            Husband's Fath.   Nichalos VAUGHAN
   Wife's Fath   William WESTMAN

Thanks Audrey - not sure if it is the same as the Elizabeth Westman I am chasing was not born until 1856 and it was her father who was William Westman. However nothing is impossible and William Westman may have married again and started another family.
