It is strange Jacqueline. It could even be a case of a dislike of the vicar at Bethnal Green. I'd need to look more closely at the church records.
I did have one case in Durham where many of my husband's relatives were baptized in a nearby town and I then found out the local church was being rebuilt during this time.

Hi, I've just come accross this thread.

My ancestor was Mary Charlotte Woodbine, her father John Woodbine was a Whitesmith. Her baptism in 1801 at St Leonards gives an address of New Inn Yard.  Census returns for her show her place of birth as Bethnal Green.  I too am mystified. I am wondering if her father listed his workplace so that he could use St Leonard's church.

I can't tell if they were actually living in New Inn Yard.  The church would have only been a few minutes walk away though.  Perhaps my ancestor thought it easier to describe her place of birth as Bethnal Green?  I don't know enough about the area at the time to come to any conclusion.

Incidentally, the family moved on to Greenwich sometime before 1813 but Mary's father returned to St Leonard's to marry his second wife but continued to live in Greenwich.

I've just had word back from my cousin in Australia who has the original. (I thought another cousin had it).  I've asked her if she has any more information.  She did send me the original photograph of the Daguerreotype.  She thinks the sleeve style is more from the 1850's but if that is the case then that would make her 20 (or more).  Not impossible, but you don't know.  Reading a bit more about  the hairstyle then that was the fashion from mid 1840's to mid 1850's.
Thank you everyone for your help.

Thank you Jim1 and Dr Dude, all help and suggestions are very much appreciated.

Thank you, yes an absolute treasure.  :) My cousin has the original.  She has no children so I'm hoping it might find its way to me in years to come as she knows of my great love of family history and actually most things historic.

Hi Regorian

Yes this is the family. This is what I couldn't understand. However, a light bulb moment has just happened and this is what is so useful coming on a forum like this.  She was a dressmaker, so could well have made her outfit.  Perhaps she made dresses for well to do ladies.  Maybe it was one of these that paid for the photograph?? I don't think her father would have used any of his hard earned (likely very low) wages on a photograph.

My cousin has a sampler that she stitched when a child.

Thank you Gadget,
That is really useful information.  The hairstyle does fit with the time period.

I am now pondering why the photo was taken.  Her father was just an Ag Lab and her husband to be a Railway Gate keeper.  However, I am also now considering whether this was taken on the ocassion of her father passing away on 22 October 1850 a month before she married.  If so, she was a young looking 20 year old and her baby bump was well hidden.

I don't think it will be possible to get a "reason" or an exact date, but at least I have a much better idea on the date now.

Gosh, thank you so much for helping with the photograph.  The enhancements are just great and I will be sending the photo through to my cousins who I'm sure will be as pleased as I am.
As Lydia married in November 1850 it does look like this photo was taken before her marriage.  She was baptised in March 1830 but potentially could have been born a bit before that.  However, she does look very young in the photograph so with your help I'm leaning towards her being around 18 at the most.
My feelings are that if the photograph was taken at the time of her marriage then both her and her husband would be in the photo.
Incidentally, she had her first child in January 1851 and as she would have been quite heavily pregnant on marriage in 1850 I doubt a photograph would have been taken then.
Thank you again for your help.  I shall dig out a couple more photos in the coming days.
 :) :)
