Lancashire / John Mather Mechanic Bolton/Manchester bc 1788
« on: Monday 02 September 19 10:10 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking information on the birth of my 3xggf John Mather, Mechanic, c 1788 in Bolton, Lancs.

John Mather married Mary Taylor in 1810 St. Mary the Virgin, Leigh, and had 3 children – Betty b.1811, *Sarah Ann b.1813 and Thomas b.1815 – all born in Little Bolton. Mary (Taylor) Mather died in 1815 in Little Bolton, aged 26, and son Thomas died in 1817, age 1.

*Sarah Ann Mather (b.1813) mar.1843 Manchester, Thomas Adams, Fathers John Mather, Mechanic & John Adams, Shopkeeper, Wit. Samuel Adams & John Mather [Sarah’s half-brother]
Children: Elizabeth Ann Adams b.1843 Manchester, marr. 1865 George Blackwell
Mary Taylor Adams b.1847 Manchester, marr.1869 Robert Williams
In 1851 Census, Elizabeth Ann and Mary Taylor Adams were with their aunt Elizabeth Mather.

John Mather married Ann Thompson 1816 St. Peter, Bolton-Le-Moors, and they had about 8 children Joseph Mather (my 2xggf) and Jane Mather born Little Bolton, both baptised 3 Jan.1819, John Mather b.1821 Manchester (died bef. 1823) John Mather b.1823 Manchester, Elizabeth Mather bc 1827, Martha Mather b.1828 Manchester, Ellen Mather b.1831 Manchester, Thomas Mather bc.1836 Manchester.

In the 1841 Census John Mather, Mechanic, wife Ann, both aged 50, were living in Back Hadfield St, Ancoats, Manchester, with two of their children, Martha 9 and Ellen 8, but not Thomas aged 5.

My 2xggf Joseph Mather married 19 Jan.1840 at Manchester Cathedral, Bridget Cush/Foote (born 1819 in Armagh, Ireland) arrived in Australia 7 Jan 1842, with son Thomas aged 13 months, on the “Marchioness of Bute” out of Liverpool on 20 Sep. 1841.  Joseph and Bridget had ten more children born in Australia.  Joseph died 1895, Marrickville, NSW, aged 77, and Bridget died 1903, aged 84.

John Mather Jnr. married 1848 Eliza (Jackson) Smith (Witnesses Thomas & Sarah Adams); married 1882 Margaret Hughes and died in 1892 aged 71.  John does not appear to have had any children.

Martha Mather married 1848 John Neale - 3 children; married 1856 Samuel Taylor - 2 children.

Ellen Mather married 1852 Thomas Warburton, had 5 children and died in 1881 aged 52.

Thomas Mather appears to have married 3 times – 1857 to Ellen McCardle, 1869 to Mary (Hull) Hoyle and 1883 to Elizabeth Rushton.  Thomas died in 1908, aged 72.

John Mather Snr., Machine Maker/Mechanic/Engineer, appears to have died 4 Aug.1842 at The Workhouse, Market St., Manchester, Mechanic, died of debility, aged 60.  Ann (Thompson) Mather was born about 1791 in Runcorn, Cheshire.  She is listed in the Census 1841-1871 and died 22 Dec. 1875 in Manchester, aged 92 [age 70 in 1861 and 81 in the 1871 Census].  Ann and other family members are buried in Cheetham Hill Cemetery.

Any information would be most welcome.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Myers family of Dewsbury and Leeds

Thank you so much for your response.

Isaac’s abode was listed as Daw Green on the baptisms in Dewsbury (Kirgate in Leeds) and I had seen those land tax records on Ancestry.  William Myers was Isaac’s father b.1751 and died 1817 aged 66.  Isaac Myers was William’s father and he died in 1808.

Would records for the 15th Regiment be held in Yorkshire or would they only be in Kew?
I will be visiting England next month and staying in Manchester (for family research) and hope to visit Leeds.

I followed up the first son, William, with the hope of finding more about Isaac and Sarah, but this seems to have raised more questions.  William and his wife Elizabeth had two sons – Frederick b.1838 and William b.1843.  I obtained a pdf of Frederick’s birth and his mother was Elizabeth Richardson (also in the GRO index for William).  The only marriage I have found is in 1827, which is very early for these births - William Myers, Widower, otp St.Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, marr. 22 Dec. 1827, Elizabeth Richardson otp, Spinster, Banns, William sgd, Elizabeth x, in presence of Robt. Eyers & Eliz Eyers.

Furthermore, whilst trying to find a Sarah (name unknown) in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, I found Sarah Eyris (Eyers/Eyres) born 1772, bapt. 18 May 1798, age 26, St.James, Trowbridge, Wiltshire to Parents William and Hester.  Sarah Eyre, Spinster, otp Trowbridge, marr. 4 July 1796 John Harrison, Bachelor, Trowbridge, by Banns.
Francis Harrison Bapt. 3 Dec.1797, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, John and Sarah Harrison (also Fanny Harrison, born 1797, Bapt.14 July 1811, age 14, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, to John & Sarah).

Sarah Myers was 65 in the 1841 Census, 76 in the 1851 Census and 83 when she died in 1854, suggesting a birth date from 1771 to 1776, which makes her rather old to have had her last child in 1823.

I am hopeful that perhaps you may be able to offer some further insight into all of these potentially possible or just coincidental records.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Myers family of Dewsbury and Leeds
« on: Friday 23 August 19 11:01 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering what I can do to verify the following information on my Myers family.

My 3xggf Isaac Myers was born 1772 (Bapt. 15 Jan. 1773) in Dewsbury, Father William.  Isaac Myers and his wife Sarah had 5 sons baptised in Dewsbury (1802-11) and then 2 sons and 2 daughters baptised in Leeds (1814-1823).  Their first son William was born in 1800, but it seems that he was not born in Dewsbury.  However, there is a baptism 26 Dec. 1800 Shaftesbury, Dorset, son of Isaac Myers of the 15th Regiment of Light Dragoons.  This Regiment apparently was in Canterbury in 1800 and the only marriage found for Isaac and Sarah is on 9 March 1800 – Isaac Myers and Sarah Harrison in St. George The Martyr, Canterbury, Kent, both otp, by Banns, wit. Edward Pillow, Sarah Steed.

Although Isaac Myers was listed as a clothier on the baptisms of his children, on the death certificate of my 2xggf Thomas Myers (born 1815 Leeds) in 1872 in Australia, his father is listed as Isaac Myers, a soldier.  Thomas Myers was sentenced to 14 years transportation in 1833 for stealing cloth.  Isaac Myers was also listed as a clothier, on what appears to be a first marriage to Elizabeth Hemingway 8 Aug. 1793, Dewsbury. Their son William was baptised 20 Oct.1793, buried 7 March 1796 and Elizabeth was buried 20 June 1794 aged 21.

Isaac Myers died 1838 in Dewsbury Poor House, aged 66.  Sarah Myers was in Batley Workhouse in the 1841 Census (not bic), and in the 1851 Census she is living with her widowed daughter, Susanna Emsley and her birthplace is listed as Trowbridge, Wiltshire.  Sarah died 1854 in Leeds, aged 83.  William Myers was living in St. Bride Fleet St., London with his wife and son in the 1841 Census (bic) and died there in 1847, aged 47.

Hi Alison

I have obtained a Death Certificate for Sarah Edwards.  She died on 7 April 1866 at 8 Cooper Street [Toxteth Park] aged 68 years.  She was the Widow of Samuel Edwards, Engine Driver, and cause of death was Bronchitis, senile decay certified.  The informant was Sarah Roberts, present at death of 8 Cooper Street, Toxteth Park.  Sarah was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery on 10 April 1866.
There is also an entry for a Samuel Edwards in the Toxteth Park Cemetery index and I have applied for a Death Certificate in the same year, 1859, with the hope that it is correct.  I will let you know when I receive it from the GRO.

Best wishes
Sylvia

Hi Alison,

Many thanks for your response to my information on Sarah Edwards.  I must admit that I was rather disappointed, but you have done a great job in proving it to be wrong.  I suppose I was a bit unsure when I found that Elizabeth & Peter Jackson were both born in Leeds.  I am sorry that I put you to all that work, but I am glad that you were able to correct my mistake.

I have the following information for John Edwards born 1814 Liverpool, Lancashire to Samuel Edwards & Sarah Jones.

At the Lancashire Quarter Sessions, Kirkdale Session on 23 January 1832,
John Edwards (together with Joseph Green) were convicted of stealing silver plate – 8 spoons, 5 forks and 2 salt cellars (total value of 4 pounds) and were sentenced to transportation for 14 years each.  John arrived in NSW aboard the “Parmellia” on 16 October 1832.  He was a ropemaker in Liverpool but became a sawyer (treecutter)/Farmer in northern NSW.

He married Agnes Thomson 8 November 1842 in Port Macquarie, NSW.  Agnes was born about 1819 in Glasgow to parents William Thomson and ?Agnes McFie (possible marriage 16 July 1819 Glasgow).  Agnes came to Australia as a free person with her uncle Peter Thompson and his wife Janet Robertson  William & Peter Thompson’s parents were Archibald Thompson, Brass Moulder, and Elisabeth Bain of Glasgow.  (These are my only Scottish ancestors, unless it can be proven that Samuel was born in Scotland.)

John and Agnes had 7 children, Samuel b.1843, John b.1845 died bef.1859, Edward b.1847, Archibald Peter b.1850, Jessie Mary b.1852 (my gt.gm), Florence Agnes b.1854, Lilly Anne b.1857.

Sadly both John and Agnes died young at the Macleay River NSW - John died in 1859, aged about 45 years and Agnes died in 1862 aged about 43 years.

It is interesting to note that on John Edwards death certificate his father Samuel Edwards is listed as an Engineer!!

I still think that Samuel may have been born in Wales, where he was married (otp), but if only he had made it to the 1861 census as did Sarah we would have known for sure.

Best wishes
Sylvia

Hi Alison, Many thanks for your messages and Edwards family information, which I had assembled from various sources, and especially from you.  As I have only just joined Rootschat, I am unable to send a personal message as yet.

I have found the following records for Sarah Edwards, which appear to fit?

Burial record - Liverpool C of E Burials, 1813-1974 in the Parish of West Derby, Church of St.Mary, Edge Hill, Lancaster 1868 - Sarah Edwards, Abode Harrogate, buried September 18th, age 80.

Free BMD - England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1837-1915
Deaths - Sarah Edwards 1868 Sept. Qtr. 80 Knaresbro’ 9a 82
(Ancestry - Estimated birth year abt 1788 - County Yorkshire West Riding)

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Admins.) 1858-1966:
Will Sarah Edwards 11 December 1868 – formerly of Liverpool in the County of Lancaster but late of Harrogate in the County of York Widow deceased who died 13th September 1868 at Harrogate aforesaid was proved at Wakefield by the oath of Eleanor Jackson of Harrogate aforesaid Spinster the Niece the sole Executrix.  Effects under 100 pounds.

Eleanor Jackson was born 16 Jan.1813 to parents Peter Russell Jackson, Gentm, & Elizabeth, abode Headingley, baptised 22 April 1813 Leeds, St.Peter [Yorks], but don’t know whether her mother was a Jones or Edwards (or neither), however both Peter and Elizabeth appear to have been born in Leeds!

Also, I found a possible death for Samuel Edwards on Free BMD - Deaths Sept.Qtr. 1854
Liverpool 8b 116?

It is really great to hear from you and I will send you more details on John Edwards soon.
Best wishes
Sylvia

Hi Alison

Samuel Edwards & Sarah Jones are also my 3xgt grandparents and I am descended through their son John Edwards, who was convicted and transported to Australia in 1832. I found John’s baptism but not his parents’ marriage and had not looked at this line for a long time. I was so excited when I discovered Samuel & Sarah in the 1851 Census on Ancestry.  I was about to follow the Paisley trail, when I saw your information and the Welsh connection.  I think that I have possibly found Sarah’s death and Will, but not for Samuel.  Have you had more success with this family?

Hope to hear from you
Sylvia
