Lancashire / Records for Manchester orphanages for the period 1897 to 1910.

Hi

On the 1901 census, George B Williams (age 12) is living in The Home for Children of Widows at 112-114 Rusholme Rd, Oxford St, Manchester. I suspect that he was placed there sometime between 1893 when his his father Evan Richard Williams entered the Prestwich Insane Asylum and when he died in 1897.

Also on the 1901 census, Georges' sister Edith (age 9) is living at The Higher Broughton Girl's Home at 11 Devonshire St. I suspect that she was placed there when her mother died in 1899.

Where would I be able to find admission & discharge records for these two children?

Many thanks & Happy New Year,

Pat in Toronto

My 1st cousin twice removed died in the Prestwich Asylum. From Find My Past, I know that he was admitted Mar 30, 1893. His patient number is 8623. Archive is GMRRO. Archive Reference is ADMM/2/4. What does GMRRO mean? Who can I contact re getting a copy of his file?

Thanks.

Lancashire / 1901 Girls Home in Salford, LAN
« on: Sunday 02 October 16 13:52 BST (UK)  »
In 1899, my  3 cousins were orphaned. On the 1901 census, 9 year-old Edith Williams is an inmate at a Girl's Home at 11 Devonshire St in Salford. Her occupation is listed as "In training". There were a total of 27 girls from ages 5 to 15. Can anyone tell me more about this institution?

On the 1911 census, she is working as a Domestic Servant.

Thanks.
