Probably Sutton on Hone rather than Howe. Swanley and Sutton were linked until the mid 20th century as part of Dartford Rural District. A registration for Sutton could easily be an address in Swanley Village or Swanley Junction

Travelling People / Re: The Yelding Family

I too come from Swanley and remember the Yelding family. I was at school with at least two of them. My family (Matthews/Collins) settled in Swanley c 1900 along with a large number of other travelling families. I sometimes think we could generate a whole RootsChat page just dedicated to the history of travellers in and around Swanley.

Travelling People / Re: Charles and James Matthews marriages
« on: Friday 16 September 16 12:37 BST (UK)  »
This post seems to cut across my family history, but there are some unresolved ends.....my great grandfather Alfie Matthews (born c1870) always claimed to come from Woking Surrey. His father was Walter Matthews (born c  1835) who was married to Familo/Phamal Matthews. I know they were travelling folk in the Kent/Surrey/Sussex area, but does anyone know how they fit into any other families. Is Walter the same character as is sometimes called 'James'? I have a Battle birthplace for Familo, rather than Yorkshire
