Wiltshire / Re: NEATE Family (NEATE, ETTWALL, WORLEY)
« on: Sunday 12 September 10 15:40 BST (UK)  »
I have a George Neate b.23/03/1760 in Bishops Cannings, son of John Neate (b1711) and Joyce Worldly (Wordly?, b. 1723). If you will contact me direct at (*) I will be quite happy to send you all my Neates (Neyte, Neyt, Neete, etc.) From 1508 to my mother, Ethel Maud, b 1874. I am now 80 so do not delay!!!!!!!
Earlier this year my wife and were in Wiltshire and made a nostalgic and emotional (for me) tour including Bishops Cannings, where many Neates lived (also All Cannings), Enford, where my mother was born and Collingbourne Ducis, where my parents married in 1915. I still have three first cousins living in Devizes and was able to visit all three.
Altough now living in W. Yorkshire and having been born in Egypt (dad was a regular serviceman and of Irish descent), Wiltshire has become my spiritual home.
Hope to hear from you SOON.

HI

I WHILE BACK SOMEBODY SENT ME A CHART WITH THE NEATE FAMILY TREE ON IT GOING BACK TO A JOHN NEATE IN LATE 1500'S IN WILTSHIRE (I THINK IT WAS ALL CANINGS). HOWEVER, LOOKING OVER IT I THINK THERE'S BEEN A DISCREPANCY AND A WHOLE GENERATION MISSED. THERE SEEMS TO BE A JOHN NEATE C.1662 MARRIED TO JOAN ETTWALL C.1662, BUT HIS YOUNGEST SON IS LISTED AS JOHN C.1711 AND HIS ELDEST SON LISTED AS GEORGE C.1760. THIS WOULD THERE MAKE HIM 49 AT THE BIRTH OF JOHN AND 98 AT THE BIRTH OF GEORGE, WHICH OBVIOUSLY CANNOT BE RIGHT!!! IF ANYBODY COULD HELP ME CLEAR THIS UP I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL!

THANKS

JODIE

Frances, A very belated to your response of June last for which I can only apologise most sincerely. Yes, I would appreciate a list of the Gages you referred to.

Frances,
My mother's parents were Thomas Neate and Julia Elizabeth Gage and I am seeking to establish her Gage ancestors. I have the following ,starting with Julia's parents:-
Wm James G b Damerham (1842/1903) m Sarah Yeates
James G b Damerham (1810/1896) m Judith Waterman
Mathew G b Damerham (1782/1827) m Jane Ambrose
John G b Damerham (1733/1806) m Elizabeth Thomas
Edward G (?/1774) b ? m Elizabeth ?
I have details of children but have shown parents only above.
I understand that Damerham was in Hampshire from 1895 and in Wiltshire prior to that. There seem to be some connections with Rockbourne, which, I believe, is and was in Hampshire. My CD of the Wilts 1851 Census lists only one Gage and he was a student at Marlborough College!
Mine is not a one name study, main interests are Neate, Gage, Yeates and Galvin.
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Joseph,
I have the VRI and there are 25 Gage's in Hampshire between
1720 - 1892 (with large gaps). Can you give more clues on your family or are you doing a one name study? There are 289 countrywide on the disc. Regards, Frances

Any Gages pre-1900, in particular pre-1800. My earliest is Edward, who died 1774 in Damerham. Some of the family came from Damerham and/or Rockbourne. I am aware of the titled Gages in Firle, Sussex.

Thank you for your response. I am aware of the titled Gages of Firle but my first requirement is to trace immediate ancestors of the Gages mentioned in my initial request. It would be an added bonus if I eventually traced a connection with Firle Gages.

I am trying to trace any Gage ancesters as above. The earliest I have is Edward Gage, whose son John was born about 1733 in Damerham, Wilts., UK. Edward died about June 1774 in Damerham.
