Family History Beginners Board / GEOFFREY HAWKINS b1911 WHITSTABLE, KENT
« on: Wednesday 24 August 16 01:18 BST (UK)  »
Seeking information about my grandfather's brother GEOFFREY HAWKINS. He was born in Whitstable, Kent and attended his sister's wedding in 1940. Searches beyond 1940 are coming up blank on ancestry.com. Did he have a middle name, marry, have children, serve in WW2, emigrate from the UK?

father - Henry Hawkins (1868-1939)
mother - Ada Maria Pout (1871-1947)
brothers - George Henry (1894-1928), Frederick Arthur (1898-1931)
sisters - Dorothy May Jordon (1903-1976), Inez Grace Pout (1908-1986), Constance Cilvic Colley (1913-1992)

Thanks in advance for any clues to this mystery of whatever happened to Geoffrey,
Lisette

Hi Julia - My connection to the Shinglestons is through DOROTHY M J HAWKINS (b 1903, d 1976) who married JOHN CHARLES SHINGLESTON (b 1903, d 1957) of Whitstable.

John's father's name was A. G. and he owned a hardware store on Harbour St in Whitstable.
I am hoping to connect with my relatives who are the descendants of John and Dorothy's daughter "cousin DOREEN" (b 1931, d 1983).

I am a descendent of Dorothy's brother FREDERICK A. HAWKINS (b 1898, d 1931) who married A. LILLIAN NICHOLS (b 1901, d 1975) and settled in Great Yarmouth. They had one son, my dad, GERALD S. HAWKINS (b 1928, d 2003) who moved to the US in 1955.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Lisette

WHITSTABLE ... FREDERICK was a sweetiepie, the other brother was the wild boar. After the war, FREDERICK's focus was on settling down and beginning his adult life. He courted and then married A. LILLIAN NICHOLS and worked hard to get his career as an Accountant off the ground. During WW1 he took a bullet in the leg and a second in the head. The doctors removed the bullet in his leg and it mended quite nicely but they never removed the bullet in his head and he died of complications related to that bullet several years later. Frederick was very proud to be a London Royal Fusilier and served in the trenches as a signaler in northern France, His war diary reads like a movie. The other brother served as a Warrant Officer in the RAF and after the war hired on with the Lever brothers and worked at their plantation in the Congo. His obit refers to the work as having been lucrative. The online history paint a grim picture of the working conditions for the locals.

Best regards,
Lisette

WHITSTABLE ... we are related!!! I've been searching and searching to no avail and had just about resigned myself to the fact that my sister and I were the very last descendants of Henry Hawkins. I am so excited to hear that "cousin Doreen" had children.

My grandfather was FREDERICK A. Hawkins, and his 3 sisters were Dolly, Inez and Connie. My father was GERALD S. Hawkins and my mother was DOROTHY BARNES Hawkins. Frederick died when my dad was only 3 and he was raised by his mum A. LILIAN NICHOLS in Great Yarmouth. My mum and dad emigrated to the U.S. in 1955.

Look me up on ancestry.com ... My tree is called HAWKINS.

Best wishes,
Lisette
