Monmouthshire / Re: Looking for the name RELIUS or aurelius

Thanks for all the info everyone.

Ancestry DNA test kits arrived today, so hoping this will help plot a few paths to investigate also.

Thanks for that.
All my searches are in and around Mynyddislwyn - Given that Risca is just a few miles away - especially if you are on the mountains, then this could well be the lead I am looking for.
Can I ask - Did you use the OPC for this?
I did go on to the Monmouthshire OPC but I struggled to find my way around.
I've been using the Cornwall OPC for my side, and find that site so much easier to use.
Any links much appreciated.
Also, this week Husband (Aurelius) and I taking the Ancestry DNA test, so we hope that this may throw a bit of light on the search too.
This name change really does make life hard - I can deal with 20 versions of the family name (mine) of Flamank, as they are quite a documented Cornish family, but when it's a lesser-known
family you really do have to throw yourself on the mercy of the OPC, and of course, the kind people
 of Rootschat!
I did actually stumble on the fact that AURELIUS has a Swedish history, and I have looked at a lot of Swedish records but none that would like me to the father of HARRY AU(RELIUS) B. around 1730. I have tracked is son, my husband's direct descendent right down to him (husband) so Harry/ Henry is the last in my trackable line at the moment. I have married to MARY HARRY, and that's it.
The change to RELIUS is very interesting though.
I was born in Cwmfelinfach and I have extensively walked Twmbarlywm in Risca and Mynyddislwyn so having local knowledge of the area has really helped.

Monmouthshire / Looking for the name RELIUS or aurelius

Searching the family name of AURELIUS, based in and around Mynyddislwyn (near Cwmfelinfach, Ynysddu, Pontllanfraith)..and there's a name change around the early 1700's to RELIUS from AURELIUS.
I have a marriage recorded to one HARRY AURELIUS, (which checks out) but the baptisms of his children have him as Harry RELIUS.
He signed the marriage register with a cross, so was not able to write his name (I assume) or his wife.
I wonder if the clerk/ cleric recording the baptisms might have heard Harry Aurelius as Harry Relius?
As the name Harry can "run in" to the surname as it starts with a vowel? If Harry dropped his aitches (as all good Welsh people do on occasion, as do I!) it would have been given as 'Arry (A)urelius...possibly??? If there is anyone out there with the name RELIUS, or similar, please give me a shout. Many thanks
PS - Later Aurelius recorded as living at TERFIL, GELLIGAER as well. It's prior to 1700 that I am now trying to find.

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: ROWSE/ROUSE/ROUS Family - Truro and local area
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 12:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I have a direct descendant called ELIZABETH ROUS OR ROWSE as it is sometimes written.
Born: in Edmerston, Devon
Marr: 27 Jul 1622 in Modbury, Devon
Buried: 9 Oct 1632
She married
Barnard FLAMANK OF
BOSCARNE
Bap: 27 Aug 1598 in Boscarne
Died 27th October 1658

Their marriage was celebrated in a shield which is now stored in Bodmin Museum and heres the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/objects/zislk_AfRM21OI9fR6fHbw
The shield was part of a BBC programme called "Cornwall in 100 Objects" so it is viewed as typically Cornish.
They are my 10th great grandparents.
As I am following someone else's "tree" I am attempting to verify my direct ancestors, namely grandparents at this point, so have no details on siblings and parents for Elizabeth Rowse/ Rous at the moment.
You have her birth date and location, so this may be of help.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: International Genealogical Index - Advice

I have used the Batch and Film numbers on Family Search quite successfully, especially if I know an area I'm interested in together with just a surname. In this way I've found whole groups of families from which I can then search on the other sites to view the actual image.

Here's a link which helps as it lists the batch numbers by geography:
http://www.archersoftware.co.uk/igi/fs-eng.htm

Thanks - I have noted down the batch numbers I wanted to view, so I can cross reference them to this list as well now - much appreciated!

It is user supplied information with no sources so view with extreme caution and verify all data you find there or don't use it.

Sandra
That's exactly how I would view it - as a guide only.....once you get the "hints" then the spade work has to be done to back this up.

Try googling it and reading what the BBC magazine has to say about it,  fantasy land is one persons opinion.

Mike

Is the BBC magazine "Who do you think you are"? If not, which magazine are you talking about?
I am googling it, and reading through what I am finding - looking for input based on experiences here too.
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Millenium File
« on: Monday 14 November 16 20:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across the MILLENNIUM FILE on Ancestry......I have read the blurb written about it  but again I want to know how it is viewed with regards to its authenticity.
Again.....can original data be viewed (as ever only text copied over from the transcript and no original can be seen)?
As I am now in the 1500's things are a lot different to looking in the later centuries, and for some reason, I keep having a dream about Geoffrey on Monmouth and his writings of pseudo history....that might sound crazy, but I really am trying to get the facts straight, and seeing page after page of transcript makes "the folks" seem very distant and rather unreal....seeing is believing I guess, and just because this has a swanky name, I want some reassurance.
I don't want to seem flippant as I can see it was created by the Institute of Family Research, but then again, it's the first time I have heard of them...this is all such a huge learning curve, so any input would be much appreciated.
And yes...I have found someone on there born in 1499, which takes me back into another century.
As ever, thanks in advance.
