Hi STG

The 'Age/Service Group' was a grouping of soldiers with the same age and service profiles who were to be released at the same time - it is not his age, so he may have been in his thirties as you say.

I have a photo of 6 ITW in Aberystwyth - D Flight, 1 Squadron - Intake 33 but no date.  That was taken in front of the Qiueen's Hotel which is on the front but towards the northern end....North Shore.  The ornate railings in the photo remain today - I lived near Aberystwyth until recently so hunted them down!  The photo was taken by Pickford and Sons, a local Aberystwyth photographer.

Many thanks for the additional detail.  So it looks like he never saw his daughter as he was captured three months before she was born and he died in captivity.  So sad.

The Medal Card will often have his number on it.  You could use that number to look for a RA Attestation Record on FindMyPast and a RA Tracer Card on Ancestry.

Many thanks for the help.  The real surname was a major breakthrough - I had tried FreeBMD but hadn't found them.

I have taken the daughter's name off my original post.  Her name and that of her mother (Moya was her first name not her family name) appears on the CWGC gravestone.

Again Thanks
Tony

Hi

I am researching the WWII dead on our local War Memorials in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire).  One is Frederick John Roach who died as a POW in Germany having been taken prisoner at Arnhem in Sept 1944.

He had married Mary C Moya of Ballaghaclereen, Co Roscommon sometime in the period from 1940 to 1944.  They may have had a daughter.  In 1950 she was living at Church Street, Ballaghaderreem.

Can anyone help with details of the marriage and any more details of Mary and the family?

Many thanks
Tony Honeyman

Many thanks for this.  I don't know why I was having problems with the family history side of it.  Somehow I managed to miss the fact his mother's maiden name was Owen and so I ended up with a number of possibles, including those you gave.

Hi

This man is on the Childrey War memorial (was Berkshire but now Oxfordshire).  He died in an accident on 17 Dec 1942 in the UK and is buried in Childrey Churchyard.  I am struggling to find out the circumstances of his death and so hope that someone will be able to help.

Note that the CWGC site says his date of death was 17 Dec 1941 whilst the Casualty List says 17 Dec 1942.  Neither give his unit within the RASC.

Whilst he lived in Childrey having married Evelyn Daisy Welch in 1928 he seems to have been born in Liverpool and the CWGC entry says his parents were Robert James and Mary Bennett.  The 1939 Register says his dob was 6 Aug 1904 but I am struggling to find his parents or his early life.  Nothing is showing up in FindMyPast newspaper searches either.

All a bit of a mystery so any help much appreciated.

Hi Imber

Thanks for clarifying.  I wasn't very clear.
