Armagh / Re: Newry Workhouse, County Armagh records.

Unfortunately the occupation in 1901 census (labourer) doesn't rule out the death in 1907 (gardener). It might just be that the John Graham who died in 1907 was admitted to the hospital section and not the workhouse itself. He had (according to death registration) been suffering from the cause of death (cerebral apoplexy- likely a stroke) for 14 days so perhaps only there a short while. Could he have gone back to Ireland to stay with relatives?

My 2 x great grandfather John Graham had 10 children whilst living in Scotland and England between 1867 & 1901. All the children are accounted for and no records to state any of them moved to Ireland. His parents deaths have not been traced so far and are thought to have been from County Armagh / Down. My DNA matches to the Graham side of the family appear to be all based around Armagh / Down area's mid 1800's.

Don't have the answer to your specific questions, but there are several inmates in the workhouse with the initials J.G. (as all inmates were recorded on the census). The death record of the one who died in 1907 is noted as being from Newry and a gardener, aged 70.

Thanks for info. I had a look at the 1901 census record from the Workhouse and I found a J.G. age 64 in 1901 which would be 70 in 1907. The occupation was recorded as labourer so possibly not the John Graham who died in 1907. So difficult to confirm anything with partial records!

If the records are not in PRONI it is very likely they no longer exist.

This looks like the death registration that you found-

I checked 1901 census to see if I could locate this John Graham but don't see anything to rule him out.

Thanks for info and I confirm this is the death record I have. My 2 x great grandfather John Graham was living in Corstorphine, Edinburgh in 1901 census, recorded as age 63, gardener, widower, born in Ireland. The info from 1901 Scottish census ties in with the death record however the name is so common it's difficult to confirm either way. I'm certain John Graham did not die in Scotland as I have searched over the last few years using all variations of the name but no trace. I would like to have thought if someone died in a workhouse and was probably buried in the grounds, there would be a record of at least a burial / paupers burial kept somewhere.

Armagh / Newry Workhouse, County Armagh records.
« on: Monday 03 June 24 13:15 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any information where I might find any of the following records, if they exist, in relation to Newry Workhouse, County Armagh.

- Admissions records for inmates from 1901-1907?
- Death records from this workhouse from 1907?
- Burial records at this workhouse from 1907?

I have a 2 x great grandfather, John Graham, and I'm trying to find out if he died at this Workhouse on 25th May 1907.  I have found a death certificate for a John Graham at Newry Workhouse on this date from Irish Genealogy website but I need more info to clarify if it is my John Graham or someone totally different as this name was so common. My 2 x great grandfather John Graham was staying in Edinburgh in 1901 census but may have returned to Ireland where he was born approx 1838.

I have looked at PRONI but they dont seem to have records covering the years I'm looking for. Any help / point in the right direction appreciated.

Very true Dorrie regarding finding deaths at a very young age.

This family had 4 children. 3 of them died of whooping couch ages 3, 1 & 4 months old, only 6 weeks between the 3 deaths in total. Deaths all registered on same day, 28 March 1898 at Lerwick.

The 4th child of the family James Paton Robertson, died at The Somme in 1917, age 24.

Thanks for info, much appreciated.

A quick check of this address reveals this is now Boots Pharmacy. The family moved from Edinburgh to Shetland around 1897. John Robertson was originally from Shetland and returned with his family. 3 young children to the family died between Feb - March 1898 from whooping cough, tragic circumstances. John also died in April 1898 from Phthisis.

Thanks again.

Shetland / The Royal Hotel, Lerwick - Robertson family
« on: Saturday 20 June 20 10:34 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother Lizzie Robertson and her husband James Robertson were proprietors of The Royal Hotel, Lerwick in 1898.

Looking to clarify where in Lerwick The Royal Hotel was positioned? Checked old maps etc and found Queens Hotel & Grand Hotel but not The Royal Hotel. Anyone know where The Royal Hotel was, if name changed / long demolished? Hoping to visit Shetland in next year.

Thanks for any help.
