Sorry it's taken so long to reply Blueeyedcollies. I've had a quick look at my tree and can't see a connection with your William Carrick. Have you managed to find any information about his parents or siblings? It's possible he is related to the Carrick's in my tree somewhere along the line, although there are quite a few Carrick's in the northeast of England! I'm happy to help if I can, just let me know  :)

I'm added this information to see if anyone out there has managed to find anything or is also looking for information on James Sanders (b.1768 ish)

When I originally posted my query I knew very little about him and still don't know where he was born. However I believe he married Mary Dixon at St Bees Priory in 1801. He was a 35 year old husbandman of Netherby, Longtown and Mary was 25 and resident in Whitehaven. I suspect Mary's family have connections to Torver and that is how they ended up there.

Prior to living in Torver it seems the family lived in Cheshire and Derbyshire which I'm guessing is because of James' work as a mail guard - I found a newspaper article dated 31 Dec 1819 which originally came from the Chester Chronicle and mentioned an injury to 'James Saunders the guard of the mail between Derby and Northampton' following an accident (given that the spelling Sanders seems to vary and often appears as Saunders I'm going along with this being the right man).

I'd love to find out where James was from so that I can grow my tree. As always, any help would be great

I've had a look on British Newspaper Archives but haven't had any luck finding anything which seems to fit.

I've also got the 1921 census which shows my great grandad was working as a stoneman employed by the Heworth Coal Company at Fanny Pit, Sheriff Hill. My grandfather's birth certificate shows that his father was a miner but now working as a coal cutter. According to the 1939 Register he was employed as a night watchman, so was no longer mining.

I'm on the hunt for information about a mining accident which would've occurred at some point between 1921 and 1939 (apologies for the large time period).

My great grandfather, Charles Thompson, was a miner who had a bad mining accident which resulted in a broken leg. As was common at the time, the bone was cut at both ends in order for it to fuse back together which resulted in one leg being 6 inches shorter than the other. From what we've been told as a family, we believe he was working at a pit in Birtley but we'd like to find out more if possible.

Sorry for the lack of specific details, but if anyone can help or point me in the direction of where I might look for further information it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for looking into that garstonite. At least if Catherine had been the one causing the trouble there might be some mention of her!

It looks like the legal case ran from 1812 until at least 1813 (if not up to 1816) but seems to be between James Sanders and Jonah/Jonas Grigg.

It's a possibility, although the National Archives and Cumbria archives have documents relating to Jonas Grigg of Torver (I'm assuming it's the same person, just a different spelling) being sued for trespass and assault by James Sanders in the 1810s.

Thanks for posting that garstonite. I agree it's really strange that there's no sign of a burial record for Catherine. I've even tried looking for her under her maiden name but no luck so far.

I'm really confused as to why there doesn't seem to be a death/burial mentioned anywhere. I've looked through the newspaper archives and there's nothing there either. Quite odd given that Jonah was a schoolmaster when they married which I would assume was quite a prominent position  in that area at the time.

Have you got the information for Jonah and Catherine's son? I have that if it's of any interest to you?

Hi,

I'm struggling to find a death for Catherine Grigg (sometimes sp Gregg) née Dixon, b.1777 in Torver.

She married Jonah Grigg in Torver on 19 January 1797. They had 2 children, Jane b.1798 and Dixon (1802-1805). Jonah marries for a second time on 8 August 1826 in Hawkshead, where he marries Hannah Creighton and states he is a widower. Despite this I can't find a death for Catherine.

If anyone can help that would be much appreciated.
