Thanks Nannie McPhee, an interesting topic, and an amazing series of links. I will have a good look at those tonight.

Having great trouble finding my Irish ancestors, even with all the new records now available online.

Thanks again.

Ancestry doesn't have the 1939 register; it's on FindMyPast.

Hi Carin, welcome to rootschat. You need to post one more message (simply reply to this if you like) then you can use the PM facility....

Underneath Rebekah's picture there are 3 little icons.... hover over them and the one on the right is the PM one. Press that and send her a message. Good luck.

No, clearly Lewis but I've looked for Louis too as an alternative.

No sadly.... 3 August 1856, at Canton, aged 35, wife of James McCarthy, labourer. Cause: puerperal peritonitis, certified. Informant: mark of Lewis Sullivan, present at the death, of Canton, Llandaff, on 4 August.

Guess I was hoping Johanna was born Johanna Sullivan so that Lewis might have been her father or a brother, but no relationship given at that time.

Can anyone help find a Lewis Sullivan, informant on a death of a Johanna McCarthy (possibly nee Sullivan) in Canton (Cardiff) in 1856.

The background to the query is in a earlier post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=752200.0 but I'm struggling to link the McCarthy family in the 1850s to the McCarthy family in 1881 so am trying to find Lewis and any other family in case it helps.

But I can't find anything on a Lewis or Louis Sullivan in Cardiff at the time ??? Or anywhere else!

.....places like Dagenham and Romford are within the county but many people from them still call themselves Essex people. Even if born in the County Of London, which Dagenham and Romfordcome under.

I lived in Upminster and Romford, and have Dagenham as the registration district listed on my passport, but always say i was born in Essex. 😀
