Catherine Ross accompanied John Ross & wife Flora to VIC and later married a man from Lewis by the surname MacKenzie. Flora Nicolson was from Duntulm and her father (who I know as JAMES & her other siblings followed a year later). Sadly one sibling Isabella died soon after arriving. I have created a Facebook group "The Rosses of Skye (Kilmaluag)" which has descendants from that family in Oz and the UK as members. Are u already a member? If u PM me and tell me your name, I can give u more details x

Oh wow hi Scott!
I am away from home at the moment so no records to refer to, but the names Iain, Hugh or Ewen come to mind as regards the father of John Ross who was married to Margaret (called "Peggy" by her family) MacDonald.
Iain would make most sense as it follows the Gaelic tradition of naming the grandchild after the grandparent...(but of course that could include Margaret's father too!).
I say "Ewen" because we are in touch with some Canadian Ross's that also came from Kendram and have pinpointed a "Ewen" in their ancestry from the mid 1700s. And I say "Hugh" because if I recall correctly, that name was on the rent records for croft #4 Kendram (but there were Ross's at #4 and #5 Kendram in the 1800s...they will have been related, but not exactly sure who were brothers and who were cousins beyond the generation of John & Margaret).
I recall my granny referring to ur great grandfather as "uncle Hughie". He was 4 years older than my great seanair Alasdair (Alexander); and yes, I am very aware of their sister Mary who was a maid to Francis Tolmie (we have, or had, Ethel Bassin's book "The Old Songs of Skye"). She remained close to her siblings as she was unmarried, and my granny was 21 when she came home to Kendram to die. We have photos of her.
You know those 3, plus their oldest brother Iain who died aged 24, were the product of Ranald's first marriage to Dorcas MacKinnon? Our great great grandmother died the year after my great grandfather was born. Ranald's then married a much younger woman Ann MacLeod and they had 4 daughters and a son (John) together. Our family was close to the family of that John, as they lived a short walk away from my granny...and his two daughters never married. One daughter was Annie Ross just as my granny was named.
Anyway, enough blethering. Are u still in Skye Scott? What children did Hugh go on to have? It would be lovely to continue this conversation. I shall PM you my email address.  I've set up a family Facebook group "The Rosses of Skye (Kilmaluag)" which has descendants on it from as far afield as Australia.
Laters,
Amina

Hi Gerry,

My mother is a great great grandchild of John Ross of Balmaquien...we refer to him as John Ross "senior" to differentiate him from his son of the same name who emigrated to VIC in the 1850s.

We are descended from John Ross senior's oldest child Ranald - who remained in Kilmaluag despite at least 3 siblings emigrating to Australia. Ranald's son Alexander (named after his uncle who emigrated to NSW) is my mum's grandfather.
Alexander's youngest child Annie is my mum's mum. They were all born in Kilmaluag, where my mother grew up (she moved to the north of England, my father's work took them there from Scotland, when I was born).
I visited Oz in 1991, and met descendants of Alexander Ross & Flora MacDonald who emigrated with their children in 1852 on the "Ontario". Alexander died at sea of typhoid, and his eldest son died in quarantine. I met Doug & Molly Shaw and their son Kenneth of Barrington Tops, about 12 miles east of Berrico Station where Alexander's only surviving son Donald "Dan" Ross set up home. Also met Renwick MacQueen, and Wilf & Jessie Boyd and their daughter Effie. In Sydney I met Neil & Beth MacPherson (descended from Dan's younger sister, Margaret).
I have set up a family Facebook group called "The Rosses of Skye (Kilmaluag)" where we exchange photos and stories between branches of the family in Skye, VIC, NSW, and Canada. We have Ellen Ross Lilley and Lyn Smith in that group - both descended from Alexander & Flora. Are you also descended from Alexander?
Regards,
Amina

Please do check out our Facebook page (u may need to 'friend' me - I am Amina Hussain).
You probably also know my mum's other 3rd cousin Jeannie Poole? Her mother was Ethel Buckingham (whose brother was Alec Learmonth) - both visited my granny on Skye, but 60 years apart from one another! Alec during WW1, when he was on leave from the trenches in France; and Ethel in the late 1970s with her daughter Jeannie. They were 2 of 4 children of Mary Ross - John Ross junior's youngest child. Our families have remained in touch for over 100 years!
I recall Jeannie saying she knew your dad's youngest sister well.

Two more of my granny's Australian second cousins visited her in WW1 - Hugh Borden, and Lindsay Ross. We have (poor quality) photocopies of photos that Lindsay took whilst at their old home in Kendram, Kilmaluag ....they are very precious to me as they are the only images that exist of my great grandparents....funny that I only got them when I visited family in Oz in 1991!!! Ever since, I have been trying to make contact with Lindsay's descendants to see who holds the 'originals' and whether modern technology means they could scan me better quality images. Are you in touch with your second cousins Shirley Ailsa Ross or Bruce Lindsay Ross (the children of Lindsay) - are they even still alive?
Best wishes,
Amina
P.s. I heard the story of brother & sister marrying brother & sister frequently in that branch of the Rosd family: as well as your grandfather Donald marrying Emeratta Borden (whose brother Walter married Donald's older sister Margaret), Jeannie's mother Ethel married the brother of her sister in law (Alice Buckingham, who married Alec Learmonth). I am in close contact with the Learmonths...I just met Janet last month in London (she's Lyn Learmonths daughter...Lyn being one of Alec's 4 boys...all 3rd cousins of my mother .... But a 2nd cousin to you!)
SMALL WORLD....GETTING SMALLER!

Hi,
My mother is also a great great grandchild of John Ross of Balmaquien...we refer to him as John Ross "senior" to differentiate him from his son of the same name who emigrated to VIC in the 1859s - are you descended from this emigre?
We are descended from his (John Ross junior's) brother Ranald - who remained in Kilmaluag despite at least 3 siblings emigrating to Australia. Ranald's son Alexander (named after his uncle who emigrated to NSW) is my mum's grandfather. Alexander's youngest child Annie is my mum's mum. They were all born in Kilmaluag, where my mother grew up. She has just moved to the north of England (my father's work took them there from Scotland) when I was born.
Do you know Ian Huntington in Melbourne? He's done a massive family tree of all the descendants of John Ross in VIC - his son Peter and I are in touch. I have set up a family Facebook page called "The Rosses of Skye (Kilmaluag)" where we exchange photos and stories between branches of the family in Skye, VIC, NSW, and Canada. Please look it up. What's your name and your direct line of descendancy from John Ross senior? You and my mother are 3rd cousins.
Regards,
Amina
