His name was Thomas de Velly (or Develly), born I don't know where, but about 1860. He married in Cairo in 1884 when he was a Sub-Inspector of the Egyptian Police, pesumably as part of the British administration around that periodd. I have the Consular Birth Certificate of his daughter (my grandmother), born Cairo 1889.

Armed Forces / Egypt Medal 1884 -1886

Recently there were a number of exchanges about the 1884-1886 Egpyt Medal.

My great grandfather was awarded this medal.

Is there any list anywhere of the British Army recipients?

Thanks & regards. Peter Charles

A couple of people have asked how good these hand-held viewers are.

I got one from Nick a few days ago.

The machine is easy to get ready, is simple to use and light to carry. It works well and clearly on the fiches that I have tried and it is easy to read the (small) eyepiece.

These machines will never give the luxury of a full reader - but neither will they take up a large amount of desk space and of course they are very light and easy to carry, unlike the big versions.

If you want something that gives you time to view a large screen in comfort, then this machine does not do that. It does enable me to sit at my own desk and read fiches without a problem.

Regards. Peter Charles
