Hi Lorraine,

Welcome to Rootschat. Looking through your list of names the following may be of interest.

In my tree I have the following...Wisdom Smith 1763-1839 son of Cain Smith and Sarah Taylor marrying Hanna Smith.
They had a daughter Bethanasia (1800-1856) who married Absolom Smith (1803-1865) and they had a daughter Adeliza (1846-1899).
She married Thomas Smith (1843-1926) and their daughter Araminta (1866-1950) was my great gandmother.
Regards,
Ashjo.

May or not be of some help, but could the 'SIG TO' indicate 'Signalman, Tactical Branch'  i.e  a member of the communication branch dealing with semaphore, flag hoists and general message handling, rather than communication by radio telephoney and morse code which would be done by a telegraphist?

Hi,

Would say that the background is almost certainly Malta.  If you get the photograph enhanced it may be possibly to get the ships name from the cap tally. Sorry can't be of more help.

Re my previous perhaps it should have read 'Yes they were Gypsies and at the time of the census were living in tents, not in houses.'

Yes they were Gypsies. The post was in response to a question as to whether census returns only covered people in houses.  The Napthali referred to died in 1865, but by 1871 his children were listed in that years census as living in Little London, Melton Mowbray.

The 1861 census shows an ancestor of mine, Nathali Smith with three sons, three daughters and his sister-in-law listed entered as 'Parish of Granby, Leicestershire. List of persons not in houses. Barkestone Road in tents'.
An old thread I know, but may be of some inter est.

Hi raa,
HMS Forth was a submarine depot ship in Malta 1950's - 60's so any reference to the submarine service in the document you have would be a guide.
Hope of help,
Ashjo
