Sorry, as I said I only found this site today and haven't read all the rules yet.  Thanks for the heads up.

Hi Jim & Kevin
Thank you for your replies.  As you can tell I am very new to this site and not too sure how to use it properly yet. I am in England, Jim.  I have had a look at Ancestry.com.au but can't look at the entries in the Gazette unless I sign up and pay them.  Is there anyway I can have a free look?  If not, could you give me some of the details of the 1884 (assault).  Was he assaulted or did he assault someone else?
Thanks for the attachment Kevin, this was pretty much the same as I found in the Sydney Evening News. Did you see the other incident mentioned in 1884? If you did, and can answer the above question, I would be grateful.
Thanks
Jan

Does anyone know how I can have a look at page 125 in the Sydney Police Gazette of 1885.  I am fairly sure my grandfather is mentioned there.  His name was Walter Tovey and he was in Sydney in June 1885.  I have found an account of an incident which involved him in the Sydney Evening News dated 6th June 1885.
