Dear Janet,

Thanks - that's very kind of you.  I will send you a note of my e-mail address separately.

Sorry to see that Thomas, like his brother, died whilst only in his thirties; ironic since Richard and dad Edward were doctors, (and I have found a few newspaper reports of Edward being involved in inquests).

Richard's work on time measurement is a well respected work, but maybe he felt uncomfortable about having spent time/effort on it at the possible expense of his medical calling, as he used only his middle name for authorship purposes: Dover Statter.

On an incidental, mundane note, I also found details of a legal dispute over payment for a suit!

With kind regards.

David

Dear Liz,

I have just started researching the life and work of Richard Dover Statter.  You may know that he wrote a world-renowned pamphlet on the decimalisation of time.  Related to this is a watch in the collection of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers with a dial laid out for decimal 'reading'.  The watch was apparently made by Richard's brother Thomas.  So far I have been unable to discover much about Thomas, and certainly nothing to verify that he did indeed work as a watchmaker. Have you found anything more about the brothers please?

Regards.

David Buckden
