Hi Caroline - I'm sure I have been in touch with you many years ago via snail mail  :)

I'm going back through my SELMES research now that I have discovered many East Sussex parish register images are now available online on Family Search.

Just a quick re-cap...I am descended from Jane SELMES d. of Simon SELMES & Ann nee MATSON bap. 1811 Rye, Sussex.

Simon SELMES son of Simon SELMES & Sal (AKA Sarah Ann) nee AYLWARD bap. 1781 Ewhurst, Sussex

Simon SELM(E)S son of Simon SELM(E)S & Elizabeth nee BAKER bap. March 1744/5 Sedlescombe, Sussex

SIMON SELM(E)S son of Samuel SELM(E)S & Mercy nee BAKER bap. 1717 Whatlington, Sussex

Samuel SELM(E)S probable son of David SELM(E)S & Ann nee JARVIS bap. about 1691 possible Ore [need confirmation but Ore parish registers not on Family Search]

David SELM(E)S son of David SELM(E)S & Susanna nee BAKER bap. 1658 Brightling, Sussex

David SELM(E)S and Susanna BAKER married at Salehurst, Sussex in 1652.

I have pieced together various other branches (including the Nothiam & Westfield branches) from Lewes archdeaconry Court wills and discovered that some marriages were recorded with the name SELVENS  ??? Fortunately most of the wills were very informative naming many grandchildren and married daughter's husbands names (I am guessing you have probably already worked through these wills).

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Chris - Sussex Lookups Required by Helen please.

Hi Helen

You may like to know that the actual parish register images for Rye and many other East Sussex parishes ( but unfortunately not Battle) can be found on Family Search.

You need to have an account (very quick and easy to do) and log-in. Then go to "search" on the top tool bar and select "catalogue" from the drop down menu.

Then enter the name of the parish in the search bar (have "by place" tab selected) and select the correct one from the drop down menu. Eg. England, Sussex, Rye and press the "search" button.

You will get a list on the right hand side. click on the "England, Sussex, Rye - Church Records (12) and you will get a list of entries in Blue writing.

Click on "Parish Registers and Poor law Records for Rye 1538-1881" (writing will turn pink making it easier to spot if you need to go back at a later date). This takes you to a list at the bottom of the page - on the right hand side under "format" you will see a magnifying glass, a camera and a microfilm icon. Click on the camera icon next to the batch you wish to look at.

This will take you to the images for that batch. Sometimes you may get other parishes in the same batch (as these happened to be on the same microfilm). Use the buttons on the left hand side (under the +/- button is a "browse multiple image" button which is useful for quick forwarding to the start of a next batch - black pages with white writing including name of parish & batch number).

Hope this helps,

Michelle
