Hi Liz,
I don't know. What I do know is that a Charles Morton, born 22 sep 1808 in Croydon, died apr/jun 1850 (probably) _or your Charles who died in I abt 1844, but you mentioned that he was rather old_
married to Caroline Neucent (8th July 1831, St Martin in the Fields). They had 2 children, as far as I know: Rose (16th April 1834 - jan/mar 1865) and Albert Morton (20th September 1836 - Apr/Jun 1866).
Rose married 23th February 1854 John Pound (11th February 1827 - Apr/Jun 1896).
If these persons fit in your genealogy, than we can help each other.
I hear from you.
Greetings,
Cyp

Hallo,
I myself was looking after this Charles Morton as well.
I did find not only a death of a Charles Morton in the district Lewisham in 1844 (and if I read the discussion here well this can't be the Charles, baptized 22 September 1808 in Croydon) but also  death of a Charles Morton in the district Lewisham in 1850 (APR/JUN 1850)
I think this must be the husband of Caroline Neucent, victualler in Lee.
At least this fits with Caroline being a widow in 1851.
