Hi there,
I have the original marriage certificate for James and Mary Spikin, so that is beyond doubt.  From that, his father John was a printer and I have also a reference to his apprenticeship in a data base of the Staioners company. James , James Francis and James Alexander have got thoroughly confused in out discussions but I have tabulated it all and have it straight, I hope. I am struggling to fit the right Elizabeth to our John, but think it is Elizabeth  Stopps. James is his son, James Francis my great grandfather and James Alexander my great uncle. The problem we are trying to solve is one of the   Dorothys. I am sure in my own mind that the one we want is the daughter of James Alexander and Kate Taylor and think that my best move is to send the marriage cert of Dorothy ( Doris)?and Bernard Nicholas, which I know is fact so will do that. The James and the Dorothy's are bugging me!!

Hi Jackie, I know you have been talking to 4th cousin David and hope that we have now sorted out Dorothy Maud to your satisfaction!! I have been checking facts on Ancestry and was horrified to found a members tree which had his father dying in 1808 when James wasn't born until 1823 and his mother dying in 1826 when both parents were on the 1841 census. Whoops!!! So do be careful. I am sure that his parents are John and Elizabeth - I have his original wedding certificate in my possession, so we are sure of John and I have a marriage for him to Elizabeth STOPPS in1803 at Christchurch, Newgate London. This bothers me a bit as he was born so long afterwards, but they could have lost some kids in between, so I'm not sure about that and will look again.  John was a printer by the way. He would have been quite old when James was born if we accept the 1776 date of birth and I don't like it or the marriage much, do you? I'll look again and get back to you. All the best Gill
